The Adani Group has partnered with Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK) to revitalise Kumartuli Ghat, a significant cultural site in Kolkata. Known for its long-standing tradition of idol-making, Kumartuli is a hub for clay modellers. This initiative aims to enhance the ghat's cleanliness, safety, and accessibility for artisans, locals, and tourists.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between SMPK and Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) to redevelop the historic ghat along the Hooghly River. This project is part of the port’s Swachhata initiative. The partnership focuses on heritage-compliant redevelopment, prioritising environmental sustainability and civic responsibility.
Heritage Preservation and Environmental Focus
Rathendra Raman, Chairman of SMPK, emphasised that this project is more than just restoration; it is a revival of Bengal’s artistic legacy. He expressed pride in renovating a site deeply connected to Kolkata’s identity. Subrat Tripathy, President of Business Development at APSEZ, noted that this development would boost Kolkata's appeal as a tourist destination.
The redevelopment will occur within the Kolkata port area. Design architects have been engaged to develop the project plans. Over time, Kumartuli Ghat has suffered from neglect, riverbank erosion, inadequate waste management, and deteriorating infrastructure.
Public-Private Partnership for Cultural Revival
This collaboration marks a public-private partnership aimed at transforming the cultural landmark. The focus is on preserving heritage while ensuring modern amenities are integrated responsibly. The project seeks to breathe new life into one of Kolkata’s most iconic riverfronts.
The initiative not only aims to restore the physical structure but also to rejuvenate the cultural essence associated with Kumartuli Ghat. By addressing past neglect and infrastructure issues, the project hopes to create a vibrant space that honours its historical significance.
The redevelopment effort underscores the importance of maintaining cultural sites while adapting them for contemporary use. By doing so, it ensures that future generations can appreciate and engage with Kolkata's rich artistic traditions.
