The Adani Group, in collaboration with Tower Semiconductor, plans to invest Rs 83,947 crore (USD 10 billion) to establish a chip manufacturing plant in Maharashtra. This initiative marks the conglomerate's first venture into semiconductor manufacturing. The facility will be located in Taloja, near Mumbai, and is expected to produce 40,000 wafers per month in Phase 1 and 80,000 wafers per month in Phase II.

Investment and Employment Opportunities
The Maharashtra government has approved four high-tech mega projects with a combined investment of Rs 1.17 lakh crore. These projects are anticipated to create 29,000 jobs across Marathwada, Vidarbha, Pune, and Panvel. The decision was made during a meeting of the cabinet sub-committee of the industries department.
Semiconductor Market Growth
India's semiconductor market is projected to reach USD 63 billion by 2026. The chips produced at Adani's new facility will be used in various applications such as drones, cars, smartphones, and other mobility solutions. Tower Semiconductor already operates chip-making factories in Israel, Italy, and the US but remains smaller compared to industry giants like Intel and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.
Additional Projects in Maharashtra
An electric vehicle manufacturing project by Skoda Auto Volkswagen India will be set up in Pune with an investment of Rs 12,000 crore. This project is expected to provide employment for 1,000 people. Additionally, Toyota Kirloskar Motor Company will establish a mega electric vehicle manufacturing project in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar with an investment of Rs 21,273 crore, generating 12,000 jobs.
Boosting Local Economy and Innovation
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde stated that these projects would enhance Maharashtra's identity as a leader in the EV sector. They are expected to strengthen the local supply chain and significantly boost technical innovation, research, and development. The initiatives will also provide training and skill development opportunities for the local workforce.
Other Approved Projects
Raymond Luxury Cottons will set up a mega-project at Amravati under the textile policy. This project will involve spinning, yarn dyeing, weaving jute, weaving cotton, jute, mesta and cotton with an investment of Rs 188 crore. It is expected to create employment for 550 individuals.
Previous Approvals
In July, the sub-committee approved projects worth Rs 80,000 crore. Over the past two months, projects amounting to Rs 2 lakh crore were approved, which are expected to generate 35,000 jobs. The first semiconductor manufacturing project in Maharashtra by RRP Electronics was also approved during the July meeting.
The Tata Group is also setting up semiconductor units in Assam and Gujarat. These units will produce 50,000 mature chips monthly using older technology still widely used in consumer electronics and automobiles.
These initiatives reflect a significant push by the government to reduce dependency on imported semiconductors while fostering local innovation and employment opportunities.
