Artificial intelligence (AI) is now essential for businesses globally, according to Publicis Sapient CEO Nigel Vaz. Speaking at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting, Vaz highlighted AI's transformative potential across industries. He noted that while global AI regulation is slow, some countries may set standards that others will adopt.

Publicis Sapient, originally founded as Sapient in 1990 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is part of France's Publicis Groupe. Vaz observed that this year's Davos meeting was timely, as organisations and nations seek to leverage data to empower citizens and businesses. "Almost every CEO here has a focus area on how we can advance their products in their target markets using AI," he stated.
AI Regulation and Global Standards
Vaz expressed scepticism about swift progress in global AI regulation. He anticipates that individual countries will develop standards that others might follow. Citing the European Union's GDPR as an example, he noted how companies worldwide adopted these data regulations informally due to their sensible nature.
However, Vaz warned that some countries' regulations might be overly restrictive, potentially hindering innovation. He emphasised the importance of establishing governance frameworks to address concerns like ethics and privacy, which are crucial for multinational companies.
The Impact of AI on Business
Vaz believes AI is no longer optional and will significantly change every business aspect. "I don’t think AI is an option anymore and it is going to pervasively transform every aspect of every business," he said. He stressed the need for businesses to adapt to this new reality.
He also mentioned that almost every organisational area could be reimagined with AI's capabilities. This transformation could lead to advancements in retail and personalised offers, among other sectors.
Future of AI and Regulation
Looking ahead, Vaz finds it intriguing how government regulations will shape the AI landscape. He underlined the necessity for rules and frameworks to ensure businesses thrive while addressing governance and personal data protection concerns.
The ongoing discussions at forums like Davos highlight the urgency for countries and companies to harness AI effectively. As standards emerge, they may guide global practices, influencing how businesses operate in this intelligent world.
The conversation around AI continues to evolve, with leaders recognising its potential and challenges. As nations develop their regulatory approaches, the balance between innovation and restriction remains a critical consideration.
