Air India And IndiGo Cancel Flights Amid Safety Concerns In India-Pakistan Region

IndiGo and Air India, two of India's prominent airlines, have both issued statements confirming the cancellation of their flights to and from several cities along the border, including Srinagar, Jammu, Amritsar, and Chandigarh due to safety concerns. These cancellations affect flights scheduled for May 13, impacting travelers' plans significantly. On May 12, Air India communicated through a post on X, previously known as Twitter, detailing the suspension of flights to and from key cities such as Jammu, Leh, Jodhpur, Amritsar, Bhuj, Jamnagar, Chandigarh, and Rajkot on the following day. Similarly, IndiGo announced the cancellation of its flights to and from Jammu, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Leh, Srinagar, and Rajkot, citing the latest developments and prioritizing passenger safety. Both airlines have been actively monitoring the situation, ready to provide further updates when necessary.

The cancellations came in the wake of the Airports Authority of India's announcement that civilian flight operations at 32 airports, previously halted amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, would resume. This decision followed a ceasefire agreement reached by the two nations, aiming to de-escalate the situation. The airports, including those in locations such as Adhampur, Ambala, Awantipur, and many others, were reopened for civilian flights on Monday, just a day before the cancellations were announced.

The tension between India and Pakistan had escalated following a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22, which led to the tragic loss of 26 lives. The attack, linked to cross-border terrorism, prompted India to launch Operation Sindoor, targeting terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The operation successfully neutralized more than 100 terrorists and dismantled multiple camps of groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), and Hizbul Mujahideen.
