Akasa Air has partnered with Adani Airport Holdings to begin operations at the Navi Mumbai airport, expected to open in late August. Initially, the airline will have 15 domestic flights departing from this new location, increasing to 50 by the end of the winter schedule, according to Founder and CEO Vinay Dube.

Akasa Air plans to operate from both the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport. This expansion will boost daily departures from Mumbai to over 80. Dube mentioned that about 60% of passengers for both airports come from the same catchment area, but the new airport will also serve a unique range of travellers.
Partnerships and Growth Plans
Recently, Indigo also announced a similar agreement to operate from Navi Mumbai's new airport. Despite these developments, Dube clarified that Akasa Air is not aiming to consolidate its presence at this Rs 20,000 crore investment project. Instead, they are focusing on expanding their operations across multiple locations.
The Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is set to handle 20 million passengers and 0.5 million metric tonnes of cargo annually in its initial phase. Eventually, it aims to expand its capacity to accommodate 90 million passengers and 3.2 million metric tonnes of cargo each year.
Capacity Challenges and Future Prospects
A company official highlighted that Mumbai has faced capacity constraints for over a decade. The city's passenger volume growth has lagged behind national averages, growing at under 4% annually compared to the country's 6-7%. This situation presents an opportunity for NMIA to attract more traffic.
Akasa Air did not disclose specific details regarding costs or incentives offered by the airport operator. Information about flight slots remains pending due to necessary permissions required for operations at the new airport.
Strategic Expansion and Partnerships
By the end of FY27, Akasa plans to station 10 aircraft at Navi Mumbai airport. Arun Bansal, Chief Executive of AAHL, stated that Akasa is one of their inaugural airline partners. He praised their rapid growth and forward-thinking approach as ideal for NMIA's development into a significant domestic and international hub.
The collaboration between Akasa Air and Adani Airport Holdings marks a significant step in enhancing connectivity from Mumbai. As operations commence at Navi Mumbai airport, it promises increased travel options for passengers while addressing long-standing capacity issues in India's financial capital.
