Akasa Air has slashed ticket prices for flights to Prayagraj by 30-45%, according to sources. This move comes after the government urged airlines to keep fares reasonable. The price cut coincides with the ongoing Maha Kumbh, which began on January 13 and will end on February 26. The civil aviation ministry had previously asked airlines to increase flights and ensure fair pricing for Prayagraj routes.

In response, Akasa Air announced on Thursday that it has boosted connectivity to Prayagraj. New special flights are now available from Pune, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Bengaluru. These additions complement the existing daily direct services from Mumbai and Delhi. The airline's website shows a Pune-Prayagraj flight ticket for February 19 priced slightly above Rs 28,000.
Government Intervention and Consumer Concerns
The surge in travel demand has led to high airfares for Prayagraj flights, making it challenging for devotees to plan their trips to the Maha Kumbh. On January 25, Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi addressed this issue in a letter to Civil Aviation Minister K Ram Mohan Naidu. Joshi highlighted complaints about the steep prices and requested action in the interest of consumers.
Joshi's letter stated, "I shall be grateful if you could kindly look into the matter considering the consumers interest and do the needful." The government's intervention aims to make air travel more accessible for those attending the religious event.
Impact of Increased Flights
The civil aviation ministry's directive on Wednesday urged airlines to boost flight numbers while keeping fares reasonable. Akasa Air's decision to enhance its flight schedule aligns with this request. By increasing flights and reducing prices, the airline aims to accommodate more passengers during this peak travel period.
With these changes, Akasa Air hopes to ease travel for devotees heading to the Maha Kumbh. The airline's efforts reflect a broader industry response to government calls for fair pricing and increased accessibility during significant events.
The adjustments in flight schedules and pricing by Akasa Air are expected to benefit travellers significantly. As the Maha Kumbh continues, these measures should help manage the high demand and ensure smoother travel experiences for attendees.
