The article examines circulating claims of a fresh round of Amazon layoffs, the company's denial, and how a shift towards artificial intelligence is shaping its workforce strategy and investment in data centres, alongside broader tech sector reductions.
Reports of another huge round of Amazon layoffs are circulating again, suggesting up to 14,000 job cuts worldwide and even possible team closures. However, Amazon has publicly rejected these claims, with an Amazon spokesperson telling India Today Tech over email, "These reports are false and not based in fact."
After 30,000 Job Cuts, Amazon Denies Another 14,000 Layoff Round
The new speculation follows two earlier layoff rounds within a year, which already removed 30,000 roles. Amazon cut 16,000 jobs in January 2026 and had axed 14,000 positions in late 2025, affecting several divisions and levels of staff across the organisation.

Amazon Layoffs in May 2026: Report
Asia Business Outlook has reported that Amazon is likely to fire 14,000 workers globally by May 2026. According to the report, the potential Amazon layoffs would mainly hit corporate staff, including white-collar employees and mid-level managers in Amazon Web Services (AWS), retail operations, and human resources teams.
The same report on Amazon layoffs suggests that some teams in China could be shut down completely as part of this restructuring. These alleged job cuts are seen as linked to a shift in Amazon’s long-term strategy, which aims to streamline operations and focus more resources on artificial intelligence projects.
Speculation around Amazon layoffs has grown on professional networking platforms, especially after a Blind post shared on X gained attention. A user claiming to work at Amazon wrote on Blind, "Heard rumors about layoffs happening in May.. Heard that it's gonna bring a lot of restructuring and may cut more than 10k people."
The same Blind post about possible Amazon layoffs captured the mood within parts of the workforce. The user continued, "I'm already so stressed and anxious about this job and don't know what to do with this news.. Should I look for another job?" The report also mentions staff complaints about "unclear performance criteria" linked to previous layoff decisions.
Amazon Layoffs: Global Tech Job Cuts in Comparison
Amazon layoffs are part of a broader pattern of tech job reductions worldwide. Oracle recently laid off about 30,000 employees through a 6 am email, and the report states that around 12,000 of those impacted workers are based in India, highlighting the scale of change affecting Indian tech jobs.
Other global companies cutting staff alongside Amazon layoffs include Microsoft, TCS, and Accenture, which have all removed thousands of roles. Meta is also reportedly preparing to reduce its workforce by as many as 15,000 employees, adding to worries about long-term hiring in the technology sector.
| Company | Reported or recent layoffs | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon | 16,000 in Jan 2026; 14,000 in late 2025; up to 14,000 more reported | Fresh round denied by Amazon spokesperson |
| Oracle | About 30,000 | Roughly 12,000 reportedly in India |
| Meta | Up to 15,000 planned | Reported future job cuts |
Amid the debate on Amazon layoffs, the company is moving aggressively into artificial intelligence. Amazon has invested in AI firms such as Anthropic and OpenAI, and is planning to spend more than $125 billion on data centres, which will support AI workloads and cloud computing growth.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has previously said that generative AI and AI agents could reduce the need for certain roles at the company. This view has fuelled concerns that further Amazon layoffs might accompany the shift towards automation, even as the company officially disputes the latest report of job cuts.
