Apple Inc's iPhone has claimed the throne as the best-selling smartphone series worldwide, toppling Samsung Electronics Co from its long-standing reign. This shift marks the first time Samsung has conceded the top spot since 2010, signalling a significant milestone in the competitive landscape of the smartphone industry.
According to estimates by research firm IDC, the iPhone secured a formidable position, accounting for one-fifth of the global market with an impressive 235 million shipments in 2023. Meanwhile, Samsung faced a double-digit slump, with shipments totalling 226.6 million, placing it in second position. Notably, Chinese device makers like Xiaomi Corp trailed behind in the race.
Apple's success extends beyond the holiday quarter dominance, showcasing its ability to weather an industry-wide slump more effectively than its competitors. Despite a lukewarm reception for the iPhone 15 in China, Apple managed to expand shipments, strategically countering challenges posed by Huawei Technologies Co's growing popularity and a widening ban on government use.

IDC research director Nabila Popal highlighted Apple's achievement, stating, "While we saw some strong growth from low-end Android players like Transsion and Xiaomi in the second half of 2023, the biggest winner is clearly Apple." Popal attributed Apple's success to the increasing trend of premium devices, which now represent over 20% of the market.
One of the driving forces behind the shift toward premium devices has been Apple's aggressive offers, enticing consumers with attractive trade-in deals and interest-free financing. In 2023, Apple was the only player in the global top three to register growth, experiencing a 3.7% increase. This growth is particularly noteworthy given the wider decline in the industry.
Apple is not without its challenges, especially in its largest market, China. The lukewarm reception for the iPhone 15 in the country, coupled with increasing regulatory challenges and renewed competition from Huawei, has posed hurdles. Huawei managed to reclaim some lost market share by releasing the Mate 60 Pro smartphone equipped with an advanced made-in-China processor.
In response to the challenges in China, Apple recently introduced rare discounts on the iPhone, offering as much as a 5% reduction per handset. The move is seen as a strategic effort to stem the further erosion of sales in the face of competition.
Despite the hurdles, Apple's resilience in the global market is evident, with the company successfully navigating challenges and maintaining its position at the forefront of smartphone sales. The shift towards premium devices, coupled with innovative marketing strategies, has allowed Apple to not only withstand industry headwinds but also surpass long-standing competitors.
