Apple's latest software rollout has caused widespread confusion among iPhone users after the company released iOS 26.2 and iOS 18.7.3 on December 12. According to a report by Forbes, users with newer iPhone models are no longer being offered the iOS 18.7.3 update, despite Apple's long-standing practice of continuing security updates for older operating system versions.
Apple Blocks iOS 18.7.3, Forces To iPhone Users Switch To iOS 26.2
Instead, iPhones capable of running iOS 26 are now only seeing iOS 26.2 as the available update, effectively pushing users toward Apple's newest operating system even if they prefer to remain on iOS 18.

Newer iPhones Locked Out of iOS 18.7.3
The report notes that devices ranging from the iPhone 11 to the iPhone 16 no longer have access to iOS 18.7.3 through the standard Software Update menu. This marks a departure from Apple's usual policy of supporting the previous year's operating system with security patches for several months after a major new release.
Apple Limits iOS 18.7.3 Update to iPhone XS, XS Max and XR
Currently, only three older models - iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR - continue to receive iOS 18.7.3, as these devices are not compatible with iOS 26.
Initially, some users reported that enabling public or developer beta settings temporarily restored access to iOS 18.7.3. However, according to developers and user reports cited by Forbes, Apple has now removed that workaround as well.
With the beta option no longer available, users on supported iOS 26 devices are left with no alternative but to install iOS 26.2 if they want the latest security updates.
Apple has traditionally allowed users to delay major software upgrades while still receiving critical security patches. This year, that transition period appears to have ended far sooner than expected, raising questions about whether the move is the result of an internal error or a deliberate policy change.
Tech analyst Jason Snell of Six Colors echoed these concerns, stating that Apple's decision "effectively forces users to take the iOS 26 upgrade if they want the security updates."
User Concerns Over iOS 26 Experience
The development is particularly troubling for users who have been hesitant to upgrade due to early-cycle issues with iOS 26. Some users have reported dissatisfaction with Apple's new Liquid Glass interface, while others remain cautious about potential bugs that typically accompany major OS launches.
With no access to iOS 18 security patches on newer devices, these users now face a difficult choice between upgrading to iOS 26 or remaining on an older version without ongoing security support.
Switching To iOS 26: What This Means for iPhone Users
Apple has not yet issued an official statement clarifying the change. Until then, iPhone users running compatible devices should be aware that iOS 26.2 is currently the only update path available for receiving the latest security fixes.
The move signals what could be a significant shift in Apple's software support strategy, potentially setting a new precedent for how quickly older iOS versions are phased out after major releases.
