Apple Inc has decided to pull the plug on its ambitious decade-long project to develop an electric car, codenamed Project Titan. The decision was disclosed internally on Tuesday, leaving nearly 2,000 employees associated with the project taken aback. Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams and Vice President Kevin Lynch, who led the effort, announced the shift in focus to the company's artificial intelligence (AI) division, marking a significant move in one of the most ambitious projects in Apple's history.
The team working on the Apple car, known as the Special Projects Group (SPG), will now transition to the AI division under the leadership of executive John Giannandrea. The focus of these employees will shift towards generative AI projects, aligning with Apple's evolving priorities in the tech industry. While the fate of several hardware engineers and vehicle designers remains uncertain, the possibility for them to apply for positions in other Apple teams is on the table. Layoffs are anticipated, though the exact number is yet to be determined.

Investors reacted positively to the news, causing Apple shares to climb by about 1%, closing at $182.63 in New York. The decision was also welcomed by Tesla Inc's CEO, Elon Musk, who expressed his approval on social media.
The decision to discontinue Project Titan marks the end of a multibillion-dollar effort that aimed to propel Apple into the electric vehicle (EV) industry. Initially conceived in 2014, the project faced numerous challenges, including changes in leadership and strategy. Lynch and Williams took charge a few years ago, attempting to navigate the complexities of developing a fully autonomous electric vehicle with innovative features such as a limousine-like interior and voice-guided navigation.
However, the project encountered hurdles in designing the vehicle and, more critically, in cracking self-driving technology. Apple conducted road tests since 2017 using a Lexus SUV exterior, but the goal of producing a market-ready vehicle seemed distant. The decision to wind down the project comes amid a cooling market for electric vehicles, with concerns over high prices and a lack of charging infrastructure discouraging mainstream adoption.
General Motors Co and Ford Motor Co have already shifted focus to producing more hybrid vehicles in response to lacklustre EV demand. Even industry leader Tesla has cautioned that its rate of expansion will be notably lower, and domestic EV sales growth is expected to decelerate to 11% this year from an estimated 47% growth rate in 2023, according to UBS AG.
Apple's top executives reached the final decision in recent weeks, following reports that Project Titan had reached a make-or-break point. The most recent proposal was to delay the car's release until 2028, with a reduction in self-driving specifications from Level 4 to Level 2+ technology. The Apple car team consisted of experts from various corners of the automotive industry, including designers from prestigious brands like Aston Martin, Lamborghini, BMW, and Porsche.
In the new arrangement, Lynch will report to Giannandrea, emphasizing a strategic shift within the company. Apple had initially envisioned a car without a steering wheel and pedals, but those plans were scrapped earlier. The company also considered a remote command centre to take over for a driver, showcasing the project's diverse and evolving nature.
Most recently, Apple had imagined pricing the car at around $100,000. However, concerns arose about the vehicle's ability to generate the profit margins typical of Apple products. The board was hesitant to continue allocating hundreds of millions of dollars annually to a project with uncertain outcomes.
Apple spent $113 billion on research and development over the past five years, with an average annual growth rate of about 16%. The recent launch of the Vision Pro headset, Apple's first new product category in almost a decade.
While Apple has abandoned projects in the past, including a plan to make a TV set around 2015, few endeavours have lasted as long, involved as many employees, or accumulated such substantial expenses. The company's significant push into the auto industry was previously represented by CarPlay software, designed to allow drivers to access iPhone features like maps and Siri seamlessly. With the shift away from the electric car project, Apple can now focus on enhancing CarPlay, potentially spreading its integration to more vehicle models.
Bloomberg Intelligence analysts Anurag Rana and Andrew Girard suggest that Apple's decision to shift resources towards generative AI is a strategic move, considering the long-term profitability potential of AI revenue streams compared to the challenges faced by the automotive industry.
