Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently announced an ambitious goal for the state to achieve a solar power production capacity of 3,000 megawatts (MW) by 2027. This announcement was made during the foundation stone laying ceremony for a new 25 MW solar power plant in Namrup, Dibrugarh. The initiative is part of Assam's broader strategy to embrace green energy and reduce environmental impact.

The Namrup solar power project, which comes with an investment of Rs 115 crore, marks a significant step towards this goal. It is a collaborative effort between Assam Power Generation Corporation and Oil India Limited, with an expected completion date by July 2025. This project not only signifies Assam's commitment to sustainable development but also aims to bolster the state's power generation capabilities.
Chief Minister Sarma highlighted the pressing need for increased power production in Assam, noting that the state's peak-hour demand has surged from 1,800 MW in 2021 to 2,500 MW currently. This increase is attributed to the growth in industrial activities and the electrification of rural areas. Despite this growing demand, Assam currently produces only 419 MW of power and relies on purchasing approximately 2,100 MW daily from external sources.
The state's move towards solar energy is seen as a crucial strategy to mitigate this gap. With seven operational solar power plants producing 175 MW daily, Assam is gradually reducing its dependency on purchased power. The ongoing projects in Sonitpur district's Barchalla and Dhubri district's Khudigaon, along with the upcoming 1,000 MW plant in Karbi Anglong, are expected to further enhance the state's solar power infrastructure.
Chief Minister Sarma's vision for a greener energy regime in Assam through significant investments in solar power is a testament to the state's proactive approach towards addressing both its energy needs and environmental responsibilities. As these projects progress, they promise to make a substantial contribution to India's overall sustainability efforts.
