The Assam government is in talks with the Defence Ministry to designate areas near Guwahati towards Nagaon as a defence corridor, according to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Addressing diplomats from 36 countries, industry leaders, and stakeholders, Sarma highlighted upcoming infrastructure projects worth Rs 1 lakh crore. These include three new bridges over the Brahmaputra, a satellite city near Guwahati with Singapore's assistance, and a railway line from Guwahati to Gelephu in Bhutan.

Focus on Green Energy
Emphasising green energy, Sarma stated the government's focus remains on clean and renewable energy sources. The state aims for industries like the Tata semiconductor plant at Jagiroad to use green power. He noted Assam's rapid progress in sectors such as infrastructure, health, and education over the past decade. The state's economy is robust, growing at 12.5%, making it a significant growth engine for India.
Upcoming Advantage Assam Summit 2.0
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Advantage Assam Summit 2.0, with Bhutan King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck expected to attend. Sarma invited diplomats to visit Assam on February 24 to witness Jhumur, a folk dance by 8,000 Adivasi dancers. "I appeal to you to come on February 24 to witness the Jhumur dance to feel the cultural vibrancy and youthfulness of Assam," he said.
Educational and Industrial Growth
Sarma highlighted Assam's educational prowess with institutions like IIT, AIIMS, IIM, and others. He assured that investors would receive incentives comparable to other states. A Rs 25,000 crore corpus fund will be established for production-linked incentives to boost industrialisation. "Assam has the requisite skill and ability to deliver," he stated.
Investment Opportunities in Assam
Chief Secretary Ravi Kota outlined investment opportunities in tourism, fragrance and flavours, food and beverages, renewable energy, mobility, and logistics. He cited Assam's strategic location as a gateway to BBN and ASEAN countries, abundant natural resources, reliable connectivity, skilled workforce, industry-friendly policies, ease of doing business, and strong industrial infrastructure as key investment attractions.
Sarma praised Prime Minister Modi for prioritising northeast development and naming it India's growth engine and Ashtalakshmi. He urged industries to partner in Assam's growth journey. "Come and become partners of Assam's growth story," he appealed.
