Luxury car sales in India are poised to shatter records in 2024, with projections indicating that the coveted 50,000-unit mark could be breached for the first time in a single year. This optimistic forecast comes from Audi India's head, Balbir Singh Dhillon, who anticipates robust demand propelling the sector to unprecedented heights.
In 2023, the domestic luxury car segment experienced a remarkable 28% annual growth, reaching approximately 48,500 units in sales volume. Despite this surge, luxury car volumes still represent less than 2% of the overall passenger vehicle sales annually, a figure that has remained stagnant for the past decade.

Dhillon expressed confidence in the sector's potential, stating, "Even with a conservative 10% growth rate and minimal disruptions, such as issues within the global supply chain, we could witness the industry surpassing the 50,000-unit milestone in 2024."
Audi, one of the leading luxury car manufacturers in India, reported an astounding 89% growth in retail sales in 2023, totaling 7,931 units compared to 4,187 units in 2022. Similarly, Mercedes-Benz India achieved a historic milestone with sales reaching 17,408 units, marking a 10% increase from the previous year. BMW India also contributed significantly, selling a combined total of 14,172 units across its BMW and MINI brands in 2023.
When asked about the possibility of reaching an annual volume of 100,000 units, Dhillon remained cautiously optimistic, suggesting, "If we surpass the 50,000-unit mark this year and sustain double-digit growth, achieving this milestone is within reach."
However, Dhillon acknowledged potential challenges, predicting a slight moderation in industry growth compared to the remarkable 28% recorded in 2023. He cited supply chain disruptions as a significant factor affecting sales performance in the January-March quarter.
Looking ahead, Audi's priorities for the current year include bolstering sales efforts and expanding its pre-owned car business vertical. Dhillon revealed plans to increase the number of showrooms from 25 to 30 by the end of the year, underscoring the brand's commitment to enhancing accessibility for customers.
Furthermore, Audi remains steadfast in its commitment to customer-centricity and sustainable business practices. Dhillon emphasised these core values as integral to the company's strategy for the year ahead, aligning with evolving consumer preferences and industry trends.
The anticipated surge in luxury car sales reflects a shifting automotive landscape in India, characterised by increasing affluence and evolving consumer preferences. As luxury car brands continue to innovate and adapt to market dynamics, the prospect of surpassing the 50,000-unit milestone represents a significant milestone for the industry, signalling its resilience and potential for continued growth.
The luxury car segment in India is poised for unprecedented expansion in 2024, with Audi India's optimistic projections setting the stage for a transformative year in the automotive industry. With strong demand, strategic initiatives, and a focus on sustainability, luxury car manufacturers are poised to redefine the landscape and set new benchmarks for excellence in the Indian market.
