The Union Minister, Nitin Gadkari, highlighted the importance of adopting automated and intelligent machine-aided construction for National Highways. He described these highways as national assets and emphasised that this technological advancement is a positive step forward. Gadkari spoke at an event organised by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), where he outlined the benefits of this approach.

Automated construction methods bring numerous advantages to highway projects. These include machine-guided construction, digital data repositories for twin applications, and real-time documentation. Such methods ensure strict adherence to design specifications, enhance time efficiency, and minimise waste. They also enable timely project completion without sacrificing quality.
National Highways as National Assets
Gadkari reiterated that National Highways are invaluable assets to the country. He stressed that technology plays a crucial role in enhancing construction processes. The adoption of automated and intelligent machine-aided construction aligns with this vision, offering significant improvements in efficiency and quality.
The NHAI has already implemented a pilot project using these advanced technologies on the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway. This project utilised GPS-aided motor graders, intelligent compactors, and stringless pavers. The success of this initiative will guide future projects.
Future Projects and Technological Adoption
Based on the evaluation of this pilot project's effectiveness and feedback from stakeholders, NHAI plans to expand the use of automated construction methods. They aim to apply these technologies to several new greenfield expressways and access-controlled corridor projects, adhering to international guidelines and specifications.
Transport Secretary V Umashankar also addressed the event, emphasising the long-term significance of current road and highway constructions. He pointed out that both time efficiency and construction quality are critical factors in these projects. The focus remains on ensuring that today's infrastructure serves the nation well into the future.
The integration of advanced technology in highway construction marks a significant development in India's infrastructure sector. By leveraging automated systems, the country aims to enhance its road networks' durability and efficiency while maintaining high standards of quality.
