Today marks the first round of voting for voters in all 21 states and Union Territories of India, who are preparing for the enormous task of choosing their representatives for the 18th Lok Sabha.
With 102 parliamentary seats up for grabs, and simultaneous Assembly elections in Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim, the nation is witnessing a crucial moment in its democratic journey.

Amidst this electoral fervor, both public and private sector banks in certain states are closed today, April 19, in accordance with the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) bank holiday calendar.
Bank Closures in Key States
According to the RBI's directives, banks will remain closed in several states and Union Territories including Agartala, Aizawl, Chennai, Dehradun, Imphal, Itanagar, Jaipur, Kohima, Nagpur, and Shillong. This closure is attributed to the Lok Sabha General Elections 2024, the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly Election 2024, and the Bye-Election to Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from Vilavancode Constituency, Kanniyakumari District.
Significance of Phase 1 Voting
The states participating in the first phase of Lok Sabha polling encompass a diverse range of regions, each with its unique socio-political landscape. From the northeastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura to the heartland states of Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh, the electoral dynamics vary significantly. Additionally, the southern states of Tamil Nadu and Andaman and Nicobar, along with the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir, Lakshadweep, and Puducherry, contribute to the electoral mosaic of Phase 1.
Key Contests and Constituencies
Phase 1 of the Lok Sabha elections witnesses high-stakes battles in several constituencies across the country. In states like Tamil Nadu, with its 39 parliamentary seats, and Uttar Pradesh, with 8 seats up for grabs, the electoral outcomes hold significant sway over national politics. Moreover, constituencies in states like West Bengal, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan, each with its distinct political narrative, add layers of complexity to the electoral landscape.
CEC Rajiv Kumar's Directive
In anticipation of the polling day, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar has issued a missive urging voters to exercise their franchise responsibly. With a focus on ensuring a smooth and fair electoral process, the Election Commission of India has deployed extensive security measures and logistical arrangements to facilitate seamless voting across polling stations.
Lok Sabha
As the nation embarks on this democratic exercise, the first phase of Lok Sabha elections 2024 sets the tone for the ensuing phases. With voters exercising their constitutional right, the outcomes of these elections will shape the trajectory of Indian politics for years to come. As the electoral process unfolds, the nation waits with bated breath to witness the verdict of its electorate
