German agrochemicals giant Bayer announced on Monday a collaboration with Dutch potato breeding company Solynta to commercialise and distribute true potato seeds in Kenya and India. This partnership signifies Bayer's entry into the global potato market and its first collaboration with Solynta, known for developing hybrid potato varieties.

According to Bayer, the initiative aims to introduce true potato seeds as an alternative to traditional seed tubers. These seeds require only 25 grams per hectare compared to 2,500 kg of seed tubers, offering significant logistical and disease-control advantages.
Targeting Smallholder Farmers
Bayer will leverage its distribution networks in Kenya and India to commercialise Solynta's hybrid potato varieties, targeting smallholder farmers in remote areas. "We expect these true potato seeds to have a positive impact on local communities and on food and nutritional security in Kenya and India," said Frank Terhorst, Bayer's Crop Science Division Head of Strategy & Sustainability.
Solynta CEO Peter Poortinga highlighted that the true potato seeds are the result of nearly two decades of work on hybrid potato breeding technology. The collaboration aims to address the shortage of high-quality potato starting material in both regions.
Addressing Regional Needs
Kenya, where potatoes are the second most important staple crop, faces limited supplies of disease-free seed tubers. In India, the world's second-largest potato market, there is a need for robust varieties adaptable to various climate zones.
The financial details of the agreement were not disclosed. However, the partnership is expected to bring significant benefits to local farmers by providing them with more efficient and disease-resistant planting materials.
This collaboration marks a significant step for Bayer as it ventures into the global potato market. By working with Solynta, Bayer aims to enhance food security and improve agricultural practices in Kenya and India through innovative seed technology.
