US President Donald Trump announced plans to sue the BBC for allegedly misleading edits of his speech on 6 January 2021. He mentioned potential legal action ranging from $1 billion to $5 billion, expected to be initiated next week. This statement was made while he was aboard Air Force One en route to Florida.

The controversy began when The Daily Telegraph revealed a memo by former BBC adviser Michael Prescott. It claimed that a documentary on the Panorama programme edited Trump's speech, suggesting he incited supporters during the Capitol riots. This revelation also pointed out flaws in the BBC's coverage of other issues.

BBC's Response and Apology

The BBC admitted an error in editing but denied defaming Trump, rejecting the lawsuit's basis. "While the BBC sincerely regrets the manner in which the video clip was edited, we strongly disagree there is a basis for a defamation claim," stated the broadcaster. They issued an apology to Trump and sent a letter to the White House expressing regret.

Samir Shah, chair of the BBC, personally wrote to the White House, apologising for the edit. His letter followed an apology to a British parliamentary oversight committee, where he described it as an "error of judgement." The apology was acknowledged by British culture minister Lisa Nandy.

Resignations and Legal Threats

The scandal led to resignations within the BBC, including director general Tim Davie and head of news Deborah Turness. Following these events, Trump's lawyer demanded an apology from the BBC for damaging Trump's image through their documentary. The letter threatened a $1 billion lawsuit if no response was received by Friday.

Trump has not yet discussed this issue with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer but plans to contact him over the weekend. Previously, Trump had already threatened legal action against the broadcaster for $1 billion before they acknowledged their mistake.
