The Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru has reported a profit for the first time since it began operations. The announcement was made following a board meeting of the Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) held on May 16. The meeting was chaired by Shalini Rajneesh, Chief Secretary to the Government of Karnataka and Chairperson of BIAL.
The airport authorities called the profit a "historic milestone" and credited it to strong strategic planning, operational efficiency, and a long-term commitment to sustainability. After years of development and investment, Kempegowda Airport has finally turned profitable, proving its capability to become one of India's leading international aviation hubs.

A Green Leader in Asia
What's more impressive is that Kempegowda International Airport has also made headlines for its sustainability efforts. It is the first airport in Asia to achieve Level 5 Airport Carbon Accreditation from the Airports Council International (ACI). This prestigious status was effective from May 5, 2024, and signifies a massive 95.6% cut in greenhouse gas emissions under Scope 1 and 2.
Thanks to this achievement, BLR Airport has now reached net-zero emissions status, and that too seven years ahead of its 2030 target. This is a big deal not just for Karnataka or India, but for the entire Asia-Pacific aviation industry.
International Recognition for Green Initiatives
In addition to going carbon-neutral, Kempegowda International Airport has also bagged the Silver Award at the ACI Green Airports Recognition 2025 as per reports. The theme for this year was 'Sustainable Energy at Airports', and BLR Airport won in the 15-38 million passenger category.
This is now the fourth year in a row that the airport has received international recognition for its eco-friendly initiatives and sustainable development goals.
Bengaluru Airport Sets an Example
These achievements show how Bangalore Airport is not just focusing on profits, but also on sustainable growth, making it a model airport in India and across Asia. With high passenger traffic, world-class facilities, and green certifications, Kempegowda Airport is now being seen as one of the most advanced and responsible airports in the region.
The profit announcement also comes at a time when air travel in India is booming, with rising domestic and international passenger numbers. Bangalore Airport's financial success and environmental leadership are setting the tone for how Indian airports can aim for both economic viability and climate responsibility.
