Bengaluru Bus Strike Today: KSRTC, BMTC Services Hit in Karnataka; Are Schools and Colleges Open?

Bus commuters across Karnataka will face a disruption in travel today as employees from all four state transport corporations KSRTC, BMTC, NWKRTC, and KKRTC have launched a statewide protest on February 19 along with a planned "Bengaluru Chalo" rally at Freedom Park.

Bengaluru Bus Strike Today

The Bengaluru Bus Strike today is expected to impact KSRTC bus services in the city and other districts of Karnataka, raising concerns about daily travel, school commutes, and office transport.

Transport workers have also announced that they will not report for duty for two days February 19 and 20), alleging that the state government has failed to address long-pending demands such as salary hikes, wage revision, and payment of arrears. If talks remain unresolved by 4 PM on February 19, unions have warned of a possible indefinite KSRTC bus strike from February 20, which could severely disrupt public transport across Karnataka.

Reason Behind the KSRTC Strike Today

More than 1.15 lakh transport employees are participating in the protest, asking the government to resolve many pending issues. Key demands include payment of 38 months of salary arrears, salary parity with government employees, implementation of revised pay from January 1, 2024, and an end to alleged harassment of transport workers.
According to reports, the Bengaluru Chalo protest was originally scheduled for January 29, but was postponed after the death of transport union leader Ananth Subbarao. The rally has now been rescheduled for February 19 to put pressure on the authorities.

Management Warning Regarding Pay Cuts For The Protestors

Transport corporation management is not happy with the KSRTC strike being held and has taken a firm stance against it. Officials have warned that employees who skip duty on February 19 may face pay cuts, wage deductions, and other disciplinary action for unauthorized absence. Authorities have also indicated that legal action could be initiated against those participating in the Bengaluru rally without reporting to work.

Despite the warnings, the workers unions are determined, increasing the likelihood of KSRTC bus disruption in Bengaluru, rural Karnataka, and intercity routes.

KSRTC strike impact on commuters and transport services

With thousands of staff absent, bus services across Karnataka may run partially or remain unavailable, especially in areas heavily dependent on KSRTC and BMTC buses. Daily commuters, students, and office-goers are expected to face major travel inconvenience on February 19 and 20.

Passengers are being advised to consider alternative transport options such as private vehicles, taxis, app-based cabs, or trains until normal bus operations resume. Authorities may also issue district-wise advisories depending on the scale of disruption.

School and college holiday on Feb 19 & 20?

Amid the KSRTC strike news, confusion has arisen among many parents and students whether there is a school holiday in Bengaluru or if the schools and colleges will remain open As of now, no official statewide holiday has been declared for February 19 or February 20.

However, local administrations or educational institutions may take independent decisions if transport disruptions affect student or staff travel, particularly in rural areas dependent on KSRTC buses. Any closure announcements are expected to be district-specific rather than statewide.
