Bengaluru, known for its traffic woes, has taken a step towards easing congestion with a new technological solution. The city has introduced an app called Mappls, designed to help manage traffic better. This app features a countdown timer for traffic signals, aiming to assist drivers in navigating the city's busy roads.
The Mappls app, launched on October 12, 2025, is the first of its kind in India. It provides real-time updates on traffic signal changes, allowing drivers to see how much time remains before a light changes. This feature is expected to improve decision-making for commuters.
Developed with the support of Bengaluru City Traffic Police, Arcadis India, and Mappls (powered by MapmyIndia), this app aims to enhance traffic management. Currently operational only in Bengaluru, it could expand to other cities if successful. The collaboration with local authorities highlights the commitment to tackling traffic issues.
Social media buzz surrounding the app's launch has sparked curiosity among users. Questions about its functionality have been addressed online. One user explained that when a vehicle is 500 meters from a signal, the app informs them of the remaining time before the light changes.
This initiative marks the first implementation of such technology in India. If it proves effective in Bengaluru, there are plans to introduce it to other metropolitan areas soon. The app's success could lead to broader adoption across various cities.
Bengaluru's notorious traffic congestion prompted this technological intervention. The app aims to alleviate some of the stress associated with navigating the city's roads by providing timely information at traffic signals.

Driver Convenience Focus
The Mappls app is designed with driver convenience in mind. By offering live updates on signal timings, it helps drivers plan their routes more efficiently. This feature is particularly beneficial in a city where traffic signals change frequently.
The introduction of this app represents a collaborative effort between technology providers and local authorities. It showcases how innovative solutions can address urban challenges like traffic congestion.
The success of this initiative could pave the way for similar technological advancements in other Indian cities facing similar issues. As Bengaluru tests this new approach, other regions will be watching closely to see if it can provide a viable solution to their own traffic problems.
