The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is under fire following its steep fare hike announcement on February 9, making Bengaluru Metro the most expensive public transit system in India. While initial reports suggested a 50% increase, commuters on certain routes are now paying up to 100% more, which has led to widespread criticism and protests in Bengaluru.
People Demand Rollback of Metro Fare Hike
The opposition party in Karnataka, the BJP, has taken a strong stance against the fare revision, calling it unjustified and anti-commuter. As per a Money Control report, a delegation of BJP leaders on Feb 10, including Basavanagudi MLA L.A. Ravi Subramanya, Jayanagar MLA C.K. Ramamurthy, and Dasarahalli MLA S. Muniraju, met with BMRCL Managing Director M. Maheshwar Rao to demand an immediate rollback.
Widespread protests are being organized across the city, demanding that the government revoke the Bengaluru Metro fare hike, as it is placing a huge financial burden on daily commuters in Bangalore.

Some commuters took to Twitter, posting pictures of their Metro tickets to highlight the discrepancy between the fare hike claimed by BMRCL and the actual price increase. While BMRCL had initially stated that the fare hike would be around 50%, some riders pointed out that for certain routes, the increase has been much higher, even exceeding 50%. For example, passengers who previously paid Rs. 25 are now being charged Rs. 60, which has left many commuters shocked and frustrated.
One user tweeted, "Public transport should be affordable, not a luxury!" They called on the government to find alternative revenue sources rather than burdening citizens who rely on public transport for affordable travel.
Meanwhile, the All India Democratic Students' Organisation (AIDSO) has also voiced strong opposition, demanding a 50% concession on metro fares for students.
Metro construction work also adds to frustration
Making the situation worse currently is the ongoing Metro construction work in various parts of Bengaluru, which has led to road closures and significant disruptions for commuters. With the metro fare hike, many people are opting for buses, but the heavy traffic congestion has left them stuck in jams. This has resulted in a great deal of frustration for daily travelers who are facing delays and added stress in their commutes.
Will BMRCL Reconsider the Fare Hike?
Currently, Bengaluru is experiencing widespread frustration, with public outcry against the metro fare hike growing louder. Whether BMRCL will reconsider its pricing strategy remains to be seen, but for now, Bengaluru commuters are facing the burden of what is now the sharpest metro fare hike in India.
