People residing in Bangalore have been subjected to multiple hikes in 2025, which has increased the cost of living for the residents in the city. In April alone several essential services have seen a rise in prices, which included milk price hikes and toll rate revisions. higher fuel and electricity charges, and even an increase in the garbage collection tax These back-to-back hikes are putting immense pressure on low- and middle-income households in an already expensive city like Bengaluru.
Adding to this financial burden, Bengaluru residents will now have to deal with yet another rise in their monthly expenses as the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has officially revised water tariffs across all user categories. Effective today, i.e., April 10, 2025, the new water tariff in Bengaluru will impact domestic, high-rise, commercial, and industrial users. This is also the first water price revision in Bengaluru in nearly a decade.
Why Has Water Become Costlier in Bengaluru?
According to BWSSB Chairman Dr Ram Prasath Manohar, the price hike is necessary to offset the board's growing expenses. Over the past 10 years, the cost of electricity has increased by 107%, and maintenance expenses have surged by 122.5%, as per an NDTV report. To maintain financial sustainability and ensure uninterrupted water supply in Bengaluru, the board has introduced a rational slab-based water tariff system.

New Water Rates for Domestic Users in Bengaluru
The revised Bengaluru water charges follow a tiered slab system which is expected to promote water conservation. This pricing structure ensures that basic water usage stays affordable, while heavy water consumption labelled as "luxury use" will have higher charges.
Here's the updated pricing for domestic users:
0-8,000 litres per month: Rs. 0.15 per litre
8,001-25,000 litres per month: ₹0.40 per litre
25,001-50,000 litres per month: ₹0.80 per litre
Above 50,000 litres (up to 1 lakh litres): ₹1.00 per litre
Water Tariff for High-Rise Apartments in Bengaluru
Residents of high-rise apartments will also see an increase in their BWSSB bills. The main aim is to discourage excessive water usage and promote good water habits in residents in growing apartment complexes in Bangalore.
The revised rates are as follows:
Up to 2 lakh litres per month: ₹0.30 per litre
2-5 lakh litres per month: ₹0.60 per litre
5-10 lakh litres per month: ₹1.00 per litre
New Water Rates for Commercial and Industrial Users
For non-domestic, commercial, and industrial usage, the BWSSB has introduced a usage-based hike which is as follows:
Up to 10,000 litres: ₹1.00 per litre
10,001-25,000 litres: ₹1.30 per litre
25,001-50,000 litres: ₹1.50 per litre
50,001-75,000 litres: ₹1.90 per litre
75,001-100,000 litres: ₹1.10 per litre
Above 100,000 litres: ₹1.20 per litre
When Will You See the Revised Rates?
The new Bengaluru water tariff rates will be reflected in BWSSB bills issued from May 2025 onwards. Additionally, BWSSB has also introduced an automatic 3% annual increase in water tariffs starting from April 1 every year with recommendations from the Karnataka State Administrative Reforms Commission and aims to cover inflation and rising operational costs.
