In a major relief to Bengaluru residents, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has successfully restored the Cauvery water supply earlier than anticipated. Water began flowing back to households, following swift and strategic maintenance work on key pumping stations, part of the larger Cauvery Water Supply Project, which ensures water reaches millions in the city.
Bengaluru Water Supply Cut Resolved: BWSSB Restored Cauvery Water Supply
BWSSB had shut down operations at the Cauvery Stage V pumping station from 15 September to 17 September to carry out critical maintenance activities. In addition, maintenance work was also undertaken at the Phase-1 and Phase-2 pumping stations under Cauvery Stages I, II, III and IV, which led to a 24-hour shutdown on 17 September.

This scheduled maintenance caused a temporary disruption in the water supply across all areas in Bengaluru dependent on the Cauvery project for drinking water. During normal operations, BWSSB supplies approximately 1,460 million litres per day (MLD) to Bengaluru through the first four stages of the Cauvery Water Supply Project.
Why Was the Cauvery Water Supply Disrupted in Bengaluru?
BWSSB had earlier issued a public advisory and warned that all areas dependent on the Cauvery network would be affected. Citizens were urged to store sufficient water in advance and cooperate during the shutdown.
This planned outage was crucial for addressing operational wear and tear in the pipelines and pumping stations-components critical to the functioning of Bengaluru's sprawling water distribution network.
BWSSB Pulls Off Overnight Operation, Restores Supply Early
BWSSB teams worked overnight to complete the maintenance a full day ahead of schedule. A BWSSB spokesperson confirmed, "We completed the work a day ahead of schedule by working overnight to ensure uninterrupted Cauvery water supply. Supply has resumed from September 17 morning."
Bengaluru Water Update: What Residents Can Expect Next
With the successful completion of this critical maintenance, residents can now expect more reliable and uninterrupted water supply in the coming weeks.
