Biden And Trump Secure Nominations For Presidential Run Rematch; Who Will Have The Public Support

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump have officially secured their parties' nominations, setting the stage for the first U.S. presidential election rematch in nearly 70 years. The results of Tuesday's primaries in Georgia, Mississippi, Washington state, the Northern Mariana Islands, and among Democrats living abroad have solidified the candidates' positions, marking the beginning of a highly anticipated electoral showdown.

Biden, at 81, clinched the Democratic nomination after surpassing the required 1,968 delegates. In response, he released a statement targeting Trump's "campaign of resentment, revenge, and retribution that threatens the very idea of America." The President urged voters to consider the future of the nation, emphasizing the choice between defending democracy or allowing extremists to undermine it.

Hours later, Trump, 77, secured the 1,215 delegates needed for the Republican nomination, winning contests in Georgia, Hawaii, Mississippi, and Washington state. The battleground state of Georgia holds particular significance as Trump faces criminal charges for attempting to overturn its 2020 results. Despite his legal challenges, Trump wasted no time in shifting the focus to defeating Biden, labelling him the "worst" president in US history.

Both candidates have already plunged into the campaign trail, holding duelling rallies in Georgia on Saturday. Trump reiterated his false claims of election fraud, accusing Fulton County attorney Fani Willis of prosecuting him for political reasons. He also criticized Biden for the immigration situation at the southern border, vowing to make the nation's economy the best in the world.

On the other hand, Biden faced minimal opposition in the Democratic primary, with liberal activists expressing frustration over his support for Israel's actions in Gaza. Despite some Democrats voting "uncommitted" in protest, Biden remains focused on the general election. The Biden campaign launched an aggressive phase, announcing a $30 million ad buy and a tour of battleground states.

The upcoming election is notable for being the first repeat presidential matchup since 1956 when Dwight Eisenhower defeated Adlai Stevenson. However, public polls indicate a lack of enthusiasm among voters for a rematch, with both Biden and Trump holding unfavourable ratings. The bitterness of the 2020 election and the divisive political climate have contributed to this widespread disenchantment.

Trump's legal troubles, including 91 felony counts across four indictments, pose a potential threat to his standing among suburban, well-educated voters. The former president is scheduled to go on trial on March 25 in New York, facing charges related to falsifying business records to conceal hush money payments to a porn star. The federal indictment in Washington, DC, accusing Trump of plotting to reverse the 2020 election, is on hold as the Supreme Court considers his claim of presidential immunity.

Biden, on the other hand, grapples with concerns about his age, with a majority of voters perceiving him as too old for a second term. However, allies believe his recent fiery State of the Union address may counteract this perception. Additionally, the ongoing crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border, coupled with efforts to blame Trump for a failed bipartisan border security bill, presents a weakness for Biden in the eyes of voters.

As the candidates embark on the campaign trail, the economy remains a central issue. Biden, overseeing an expanding economy with easing inflationary pressure and record-high stocks, faces a challenge in convincing Americans to credit him for the positive economic indicators. Polls suggest frustration among the public regarding high prices, particularly for food, in the aftermath of the pandemic.
