Big Relief for Vehicle Owners! Delhi’s Fuel Ban on Older Cars Delayed Till November, These NCR Cities Included

The Delhi government has decided to postpone the enforcement of its fuel ban on end-of-life (EOL) vehicles-petrol vehicles older than 15 years and diesel vehicles older than 10 years. Originally scheduled to take effect from July 1, 2025, the implementation has now been deferred to November 1, 2025, following a review by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM).

Fuel Ban on EOL Vehicles Postponed

The decision comes after widespread concern among vehicle owners and fuel station operators, who were gearing up for the strict implementation of the new rules. The fuel ban would have prohibited the supply of petrol and diesel to EOL vehicles at fuel stations across Delhi.

However, the Delhi government, in a request to CAQM, sought a review of the timeline to allow for smoother transition and greater public awareness. Responding to the request, CAQM held a meeting today and agreed that enforcing the ban from November 1 would be more appropriate.

Fuel Ban Uplifted in These Cities

The upcoming fuel ban on EOL vehicles will not be restricted to Delhi alone. The CAQM has confirmed that the same restrictions will be enforced in five major districts of the National Capital Region (NCR)-Gurugram, Faridabad, Noida, Ghaziabad, and Sonipat.

Starting from November 1, 2025, petrol vehicles older than 15 years and diesel vehicles older than 10 years in these areas will also be barred from refuelling at fuel stations.The initial push for strict enforcement was driven by Delhi's worsening air pollution and a need to reduce the number of aging, high-emission vehicles on the roads. However, logistical challenges and public feedback prompted the government to reassess its timeline.

Officials noted that the postponement allows vehicle owners more time to transition to compliant vehicles, dispose of their old vehicles legally, or shift to public transport or electric alternatives. It also provides fuel retailers time to implement verification systems for identifying non-compliant vehicles.

Under these regulations, petrol vehicles older than 15 years and diesel vehicles older than 10 years will no longer be allowed to refuel at fuel stations, irrespective of whether they hold a valid fitness certificate. Vehicle owners found violating the ban may face strict penalties, including fines, vehicle deregistration, or even seizure, as per the guidelines laid out under the Motor Vehicles Act and orders issued by the National Green Tribunal (NGT).
