A claim has been circulating on social media, suggesting that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has mandated the use of specific ink colors for writing cheques. However, the Press Information Bureau's Fact Check unit (PIB Fact Check) has debunked this claim, confirming that it is false and has no basis.
No Directive from RBI on Ink Colors
The PIB Fact Check clarified via a post on X (formerly Twitter) that the RBI has not issued any directive requiring specific ink colors for cheque writing. This misinformation appears to be a baseless rumor, and the public is advised to disregard it.

In one of PIB's recent posts dated Jan 17th on its X handler, it said that. " It is being claimed in social media posts that RBI has issued new rules prohibiting the use of black ink on cheques.#PIBFactCheck
This claim is #FAKE. Reserve Bank of India has not prescribed specific ink colors to be used for writing cheques."
What Ink Types Can Be Used On Cheques?
In general banking practices, it is recommended to use blue or black ink, as these colors provide clarity and help distinguish handwritten information from the printed text on the cheque. Blue ink is mostly preferred because it stands out more, making it easier for banks to identify handwritten details. Black ink is also widely accepted due to its formal appearance and ease of reading.
However, avoid using red ink, as it is generally considered informal and may be mistaken for corrections. Similarly, pencil or erasable ink is strictly prohibited because it can be altered easily and can have security risks. Other colors like green or purple may not be compatible with bank scanning systems, which can lead to processing issues, so it's best to avoid that as well.
Importance of Verifying Information
It is very important to fact-check information, as currently the rapid spread of misinformation is a pressing issue. Unverified claims, like the one regarding ink colors, can cause unwarranted panic or misinterpretation of standard banking practices. Such false claims can lead to unnecessary confusion among individuals and businesses that rely on checks for their banking transactions. The RBI's official communication channels remain the best source for updates on banking regulations. Citizens are encouraged to cross-check such information against trusted sources, such as the RBI's official website or verified government announcements. It's critical to rely on official communications to avoid disruptions in daily activities.
