A CEO from a health-focused brand in Mumbai shared on X about rejecting a female candidate for a senior role. The rejection followed her request to have her husband meet him, sparking varied reactions online. Vinod Chendhil, CEO of Naturally Yours, viewed this as a significant warning sign, suggesting the candidate's inability to make independent decisions.

Chendhil elaborated that after selecting the woman for the role, she wanted her husband to meet him. He interpreted this as a sign of dependency on her husband for decision-making, which he found unsuitable for a senior position. "Spoke to a candidate tdy, who wanted us to meet her husband after we had selected her. Instant reject. P.s: This was for a senior level hire," he posted on X.
Mixed Reactions on Social Media
Social media users have had mixed responses to Chendhil's decision. Some agree with him, stating that such a request is unusual for someone applying for a senior-level position. Others argue that societal pressures might have influenced the woman's request, suggesting that Chendhil might have overlooked a talented candidate.
In response to comments questioning his decision, Chendhil explained further. He noted that the woman wanted her husband to interview him to determine if the company was suitable for her. "Basically she wants her husband to interview us to see if it's ok for her to join. Shows she is totally dependent on him," he wrote.
Debate Over Professional and Personal Boundaries
Some users criticised Chendhil's stance, calling it misogynistic. They argued that he disregarded Indian values and showed disrespect towards women who prioritise family over work. One user expressed respect for women who place family first, while another pointed out that introducing a husband in professional settings can deter unwanted advances.
Others supported Chendhil's viewpoint, emphasising the importance of independence in decision-making for senior roles. "I would reject even a junior-level hire if this request was made," one user commented. Another added, "It’s a job, not a marriage proposal!" highlighting the need to separate personal and professional matters.
The incident has sparked discussions about gender roles and expectations in professional environments. While some see Chendhil's actions as justified, others believe they reflect broader societal issues affecting women's autonomy in the workplace.
