Govt Orders Refineries To Boost Powers
While the Middle East crisis has impacted the fuel supply across the world, the Indian government has invoked emergency powers and directed refiners across the country to maximise production of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). The government orders came as a an attempt to prevent shortage of the cooking fuel after supply disruptions caused by the Middle East crisis. India was one of the world's second-biggest importer of LPG in the year 2025 as it consumed around 33.15 million metric tons of cooking gas.
"In light of current geopolitical disruptions to fuel supply and constraints on supply of LPG, Ministry has issued orders to oil refineries for higher LPG production and using such extra production for domestic LPG use," read a statement by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas issued on Monday, March 9.
Govt Forms Committee To Monitor LPG Supply In India
In a bid to ensure LPG supply among common people, the ministry has prioritised domestic LPG supply to households and has also extended the minimum period to book domestic LPG cylinders to 25 days. The inter-booking period extension came as a way to avoid hoarding andblack marketing.
"For LPG supply to other non-domestic sectors, a committee of three EDs of OMCs have been constituted to review the representations for LPG supply to restaurants/hotels/other industries," stated the ministry on Monday.
The government has directed oil refineries to increase production of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and prioritise its supply to households amid geopolitical disruptions affecting fuel availability, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said.
Liquefied petroleum gas for cooking and industry in India is mainly supplied by a few large companies. Indane under IndianOil, Bharatgas from BPCL, and HP Gas from HPCL handle most household demand. These public sector brands dominate domestic refills across cities, towns, and rural areas. Private operators focus more on bulk commercial and industrial users.
