Chennai and Tiruvallur districts are expected to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall on Tuesday, 2 December 2025, following the remnants of Cyclone Ditwah, which formed a deep depression over the Southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts.
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has warned that showers may persist through the morning, prompting authorities to extend safety measures and closures.
Chennai Rains Alert! Schools and Colleges Holiday Tomorrow on 2 December, 2025
In view of ongoing heavy rain and flooding, Chennai district authorities have announced that schools and colleges will remain closed on Tuesday. District Collector Rashmi Siddharth Jagade emphasised that the decision was taken to ensure the safety of students and staff, as several neighborhoods continue to receive sharp showers.

Holiday on 2nd December 2025 in Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur
Following Chennai's announcement, district administrations in Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, and Tiruvallur also declared a rain holiday for educational institutions, helping reduce travel on waterlogged roads and allowing disaster response teams to focus on clearing flooded areas.
Cyclone Ditwah Update: IMD Issues Warning for Chennai and Other Districts in Tamil Nadu
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the remnant deep depression of Cyclone Ditwah remained near the coast as of Monday evening. Moving slowly northwards at around 3 kmph, the system was expected to remain close to the Chennai coast, within approximately 30 km, through Tuesday morning.
IMD officials forecast that the depression will gradually weaken by Tuesday afternoon, but heavy to very heavy rainfall may continue across Chennai and surrounding districts.
Ongoing downpours have already flooded major roads, including Sholinganallur-Medavakkam, Manali-Thiruvottiyur, Madhya Kailash and North Boag Road, causing travel difficulties. Police and local authorities have urged residents to avoid non-essential travel and use safer, clearer routes such as Anna Salai and Poonamallee High Road.
IMD Issues Orange Alert For Tuesday
The IMD has issued an orange alert for Tuesday, warning of heavy rainfall, while disaster management teams remain on high alert to provide emergency assistance and clear waterlogged stretches.
Waterlogging continues to affect low-lying residential and commercial areas. Civic teams are working across neighborhoods, including Egmore and K.K. Nagar, to pump out accumulated water.
Residents are being advised to remain indoors during intense rainfall periods, while essential services continue to operate. The heavy rain has already disrupted normal city life, with schools sending students home early on Monday as a precaution.
IMD Weather Forecast: Heavy Showers Likely Across Chennai and Nearby Districts
Meteorologists expect the deep depression to move slowly northwards along the Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts, retaining intensity through the morning before weakening later on Tuesday. Heavy rainfall is also likely in Ranipet, Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu districts, extending the storm's impact beyond Chennai city.
Residents are advised to follow local advisories and exercise caution during travel until the system dissipates.
