The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast intense rainfall across multiple districts of Tamil Nadu as Cyclone Senyar moves closer to the state's coast. According to the IMD, the cyclone is expected to bring very heavy rainfall measuring 12-20 cm in 24 hours to three delta districts on November 28, seven districts including Chennai on November 29, and Tiruvallur on November 30.

A yellow alert for moderate rainfall has already been issued for southern districts on November 25, with the rain belt expected to gradually shift northward toward the end of the month.

On Thursday, November 28, the delta districts of Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, and Karaikal are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall as the cyclone approaches. Additionally, districts such as Tuticorin, Ramanathapuram, Pudukkottai, Cuddalore and Mayiladuthurai are also expected to see heavy showers.
Authorities in these regions have been advised to remain on high alert for potential flooding and wind-related disruptions.
Rainfall Expected on 29 November in Chennai, Villupuram & Other Districts
On Friday, November 29, rainfall is forecast to intensify and move toward north Tamil Nadu. Districts including Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Chengalpet, Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, and Puducherry are expected to experience heavy to very heavy rain. IMD's updated warning indicates that these areas could face widespread waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and possible power outages as the cyclone edges closer to the Chennai coastline.
Chennai Rains Update: Intense Rainfall Likely on 30 November
As Cyclone Senyar continues its trajectory, November 30 is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall to Tiruvallur. The surrounding districts-Chennai, Chengalpet, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, and Puducherry-may also receive heavy downpours. Authorities have warned residents in low-lying areas to prepare for potential flooding, while disaster management teams remain on standby.
Cyclone Senyar To Reach Chennai Coast Between November 29-30
Forecast models suggest that Cyclone Senyar may approach the Chennai coast between November 29 and 30, significantly increasing rainfall intensity. The IMD indicated that the heaviest spells are expected to begin on Friday, with continuous rain likely through the weekend. Residents are advised to monitor official updates and avoid unnecessary travel during peak rainfall hours.
Is School Holiday Tomorrow in Chennai on November 28?
With moderate to heavy rainfall lashing parts of Tamil Nadu due to Cyclone Senyar, students and parents have been anticipating a school holiday in Chennai on Friday, November 28. However, as of now, no official announcement has been issued regarding school or college closures.
