Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu inaugurated a 10 MW solar power project in Aghlor, Kutlehar Assembly Constituency, Una district on Friday. The project spans 19 hectares and is expected to be completed within three months. It will generate 22.73 million units of power annually, bringing in Rs 8 crore in revenue. Additionally, it will help reduce carbon emissions by 791 tonnes, according to an official statement.

Sukhu highlighted that this is the second solar power initiative in Una district, following the 32 MW Pekhubela project. The Pekhubela project was completed in six months and is projected to generate Rs 20 crore in income. Despite being a power-surplus state, Himachal Pradesh purchases electricity from the open market between October and March, spending around Rs 1,500 crore due to reduced hydroelectric power production during winter.
Focus on Renewable Energy
The state government has entered into an agreement with Oil India Company for green hydrogen production. Emphasis is also being placed on harnessing solar energy. Sukhu mentioned that the government is encouraging private sector involvement in solar power generation as well.
While inspecting water sports activities in Andrauli, Kutlehar, Sukhu stated that promoting tourism is a priority for the state government. The development of the Andrauli area aims to increase tourist footfall and make it a significant attraction for visitors to Himachal Pradesh.
Boosting Tourism
Sukhu noted that tourism plays a crucial role in strengthening the state's economy by providing ample employment and self-employment opportunities for the youth. The government is actively promoting religious, adventure, and eco-tourism to ensure visitors have memorable experiences.
The chief minister reiterated the government's goal of attracting five crore tourists annually in the near future. This initiative aims to boost the local economy and create more job opportunities for residents.
The new solar power project at Aghlor will contribute significantly to the state's renewable energy capacity. It aligns with Himachal Pradesh's broader strategy to diversify its energy sources and reduce reliance on hydroelectric power during winter months.
By focusing on both renewable energy and tourism, the state government aims to create a sustainable economic model that benefits both residents and visitors alike.
