What Will Be Closed on Christmas Day 2025?
Government Offices Closed Across India
All central and state government offices will remain shut on December 25, as Christmas is a public holiday across the country. Administrative services will resume on the next working day.
Schools and Colleges Shut Nationwide
Educational institutions, including schools and colleges, will be closed across India on Christmas Day. In states such as Delhi, Punjab, and Rajasthan, the holiday also falls within extended winter vacations, meaning institutions will remain shut even after December 25.
Banks to Remain Closed
As per the Reserve Bank of India holiday calendar, all public and private sector banks will be closed on December 25 in major cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Kolkata. The Christmas bank holiday will also be observed in states like Mizoram, Meghalaya, and Nagaland, where banks may also remain closed on December 26.
Stock Market Holiday on December 25
Trading on both the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will remain suspended on Christmas Day. There will be no trading in equities, derivatives, or commodities.
Post Offices Closed (With One Exception)
Post offices across India will remain closed for the Christmas holiday on December 25. However, Chandigarh is an exception, where postal services may remain operational.
What Will Remain Open on Christmas Day 2025?
Most shopping malls, supermarkets, and retail stores will remain open on Christmas Day, especially in metro cities. Usual operating hours range from 10 AM to 10 PM, though timings may vary by location.
Restaurants, cafes, and hotels will operate normally, with many offering special Christmas menus and festive discounts. Popular tourist destinations are expected to see higher footfall.
All hospitals, clinics, ambulance services, police, and fire services will remain operational 24/7, as these are essential services.
Metro services, buses, and local transport will run as per normal schedules in most cities. Train services will not be affected by the Christmas holiday.
Even though banks are closed, ATMs, UPI, mobile banking, and internet banking services will remain fully functional across India.
