Karnataka weather today is experiencing a sharp dip in temperatures as winter tightens its grip across the state. Several districts have reported a sharp fall in minimum temperatures, after which the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a cold wave alert for parts of north and south interior Karnataka. Bengaluru weather today, December 17, is also expected to remain chilly, especially during early morning and night hours.
According to IMD data, the sudden cooling trend is because of clear skies, dry winds, and reduced cloud cover, which allow temperatures to drop rapidly after sunset. Many districts recorded minimum temperatures between 10 and 14 degrees Celsius, making it one of the coldest Decembers.

Cold Wave Alert Issued for Multiple Karnataka Districts
The IMD has confirmed that cold wave conditions are currently prevailing in Bidar and Haveri in north interior Karnataka, as well as Davangere in south interior regions. In Bidar, the minimum temperature dropped to around 11°C, and it is one of the coldest districts in the state.
Other north interior districts such as Belagavi, Vijayapura, Dharwad, Gadag, Raichur, Kalaburagi, and Yadgir also reported minimum temperatures hovering between 12°C and 14°C. These regions are experiencing unusually cold mornings, foggy conditions in some places and a sharp chill after sunset.
Bengaluru Weather Today, Dec 17
Residents of Bengaluru woke up to cold mornings as temperatures dipped across both urban and rural parts of the city. Bengaluru Urban recorded a minimum temperature of around 15.8°C, while Bengaluru Rural saw lows near 14°C. Though not officially under a cold wave category, the city is experiencing colder-than-usual December weather.
IMD has advised people in Bengaluru to remain cautious during early morning hours, especially children, senior citizens, and those with respiratory issues.
Karnataka Weather: District-Wise Temperature Trends
The district-wise temperature data by IMD shows variation in Karnataka weather patterns. Coastal districts such as Dakshina Kannada and Udupi are relatively warmer, recording maximum temperatures above 33°C and minimum temperatures between 18°C and 19°C.
In south interior districts like Mysuru, Mandya, Chitradurga, Hassan, Shivamogga, and Chamarajanagara, minimum temperatures ranged between 13°C and 15°C, where nights are significantly colder than usual for mid-December.
Will Temperatures Rise After December 17?
As per the latest IMD forecast, there is some relief in sight. The weather department has stated that minimum temperatures across Karnataka may rise by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius after December 17. However, cold mornings are still expected in interior districts due to ongoing winter conditions. No major rainfall activity has been predicted, and dry weather is likely to continue across the state for the next few days.
