The first standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) in India, approved for commercial use, is nearing completion in Kilokri, South Delhi. This project, managed by BSES, is expected to be operational by the end of March or early next month. Currently, nine out of twelve liquid-cooled batteries have been installed, with the remaining ones to follow soon.

The 20 MW BESS is being set up at a 33 KV sub-station operated by BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) in Kilokri. This system will enhance power supply for approximately one lakh residents in this densely populated and low-income area of South Delhi. The batteries are designed to provide four hours of power daily, split into two-hour intervals during both day and night.
Renewable Energy Integration
This initiative marks the country's first commercially approved standalone BESS at the distribution level. It aims to support the transition to clean energy and facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources. The project is a collaborative effort with IndiGrid and the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP).
Designed for a lifespan of 12 years, the system employs advanced Lithium-iron-phosphate batteries. These batteries are known for their ability to handle significant fluctuations in electricity demand, improve power supply reliability, and enhance grid stability while integrating renewable energy sources.
Cost Efficiency and Grid Stability
The BESS will charge during off-peak hours using surplus or low-cost power. This stored energy will then be discharged during peak demand periods. By doing so, it helps reduce power purchase costs by avoiding expensive market purchases during high-demand times.
The BRPL's BESS project includes a comprehensive plan for monitoring, evaluation, and learning. This plan aims to share valuable insights and experiences with other distribution companies (discoms), state regulators, and stakeholders in the power sector.
In addition to improving power supply reliability, the system is designed to manage extreme variations in electricity demand. It also aims to prevent overloading of the network while integrating renewable energy sources effectively.
This innovative project represents a significant step towards enhancing grid stability and supporting India's clean energy transition efforts. By leveraging advanced battery technology, it promises to deliver reliable power supply solutions for urban areas facing high demand.
