On July 18, the global cryptocurrency market is up. The market capitalization now stands at $1.30 trillion, up 1.41 percent from the previous day. The total crypto market volume in the last 24 hours was $56.64 billion, a decline of 11.50 percent. After hitting a 2.5-week low near $31,000 early Friday, Bitcoin has rebounded to around $32,200.

Janet L. Yellen, the United States Secretary of the Treasury, announced intentions to convene the President's Working Group on Financial Markets, as well as the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, to discuss prospective interagency work on stablecoins. The meeting is scheduled on Monday, July 19.

El Salvador

El Salvador's government is planning to develop a national cryptocurrency that customers will be able to use to pay for services, according to El Faro, a Latin digital newspaper.

According to the report, Ibrahim and Yusef Bukele, brothers of the country's president, Nayib Bukele, promised prospective investors that the cryptocurrency, which is now known as the Colon dollar, will be introduced by the end of 2021.

Eight persons were arrested after police in Malaysia seized 1,039 bitcoin mining devices worth RM5.3 million (US$1.3 million). In combined operations with Sarawak Energy (SEB), the region's electrical company, police in the northeastern city of Miri confiscated the devices between February and April, according to Bernama.

Alibaba Art Festival

NEAR Protocol is collaborating with Web3Games, a blockchain gaming company, and Chinese artist Heshan Huang to sell his non-fungible token (NFT)-based "real estate" at Alibaba's Taobao Maker Festival this year. NFTs, which are mostly built on decentralised public chains with native coins, appear to have escaped China's new crypto crackdown.

Square has unveiled a new initiative called "TBD," which is "focused on establishing an open developer platform with the express objective of making it easier to create non-custodial, permissionless, and decentralised financial services," according to CEO Jack Dorsey. The platform will be developed in a completely public manner, according to Dorsey: "open road map, open development, and open source."

SoftBank investment

SB Northstar, a Tokyo-based SoftBank investment arm, has committed to invest $75 million in Block.one's new crypto exchange, Bullish.

SoftBank will buy 7.5 million shares for $10 apiece as part of Bullish's impending special purpose acquisition (SPAC) deal, according to a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. Bullish has a market capitalization of $9 billion.
