Delhi, Gurugram Weather Today: IMD Issues Orange Alert in NCR; Schools Closed, Yamuna Above Danger Mark

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Delhi and parts of the National Capital Region (NCR), following heavy rainfall and thunderstorms that lashed the area on Monday. The severe weather conditions have prompted school closures in Gurugram and heightened concerns among residents, parents, and commuters across the region.

The Yamuna River has once again risen above the danger mark, recording a level of 205.75 metres at Loha Pul on Tuesday morning. The danger level is 205.33 metres, and authorities remain on high alert as the river continues to swell due to ongoing rain in the region and upstream.

The IMD has forecasted above-normal rainfall for September 2025, with precipitation levels expected to be over 109% of the long-period average (LPA) of 167.9 mm. This forecast has raised concerns about potential urban flooding, landslides, and flash floods, particularly in northern states such as Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.

The IMD has also included Faridabad in the orange alert list, warning of possible flash flooding and traffic disruptions. However, district-wise warnings on the IMD website did not reflect an updated alert for Delhi, creating some confusion among residents and commuters.

In Noida and Ghaziabad, heavy rains caused traffic snarls and minor flooding, although no formal closures have been announced. Parents across NCR have expressed concern about school safety and transportation, especially in areas where roads are submerged or damaged.

Schools Closed, Offices in Hybrid Mode in Gurugram

In response to the IMD's orange alert, Gurugram authorities ordered all schools to remain closed on Tuesday, September 2, 2025. The district also advised corporate offices and private institutions to allow employees to work from home, citing public safety concerns and potential traffic disruptions.

Gurugram recorded over 100 mm of rainfall between 3:00 PM and 7:00 PM on Monday, leading to waterlogging in several areas. The District Magistrate of Gurugram confirmed the advisory via a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating,

"In view of the forecast: All corporate offices & private institutions are advised to guide employees to work from home. All schools in the district are advised to conduct online classes on 02-09-2025."

Although Delhi was also affected by intense rain and strong winds, the Delhi government has not announced any official school closures or work-from-home advisories as of Tuesday morning. The capital witnessed widespread waterlogging, traffic congestion, and delays in Delhi Metro services, significantly impacting daily commutes.

Public Advised to Remain Cautious

Authorities across affected regions have urged the public to avoid unnecessary travel, monitor weather updates, and follow official advisories. The IMD has warned of continued rainfall over the next few days, with the possibility of further flood alerts in low-lying areas.
