Delhi Weather Alert! IMD Issues Cold Wave Warning for Delhi NCR, UP, Haryana; Temperatures Dip to Season's Low

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cold wave alert for Delhi-NCR, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and several parts of North India, forecasting a sharp drop in temperatures from November 10 to November 12, 2025. This is the first major cold wave of the season as icy winds from the Himalayas are reaching the northern plains.

According to the latest IMD update, severe cold wave conditions are expected to prevail in West Madhya Pradesh, while cold wave to cold day conditions are likely across Delhi, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh during the next few days. The cold spell is likely to extend to parts of Jharkhand, Odisha, and Vidarbha between November 11 and 13, the department added.

Delhi Records Season's First Cold Wave

In the national capital, temperatures have already taken a sharp dip, with the minimum temperature at Aya Nagar dropping to 9.9°C, the lowest so far this season. This is the first instance of cold wave conditions being recorded in Delhi this winter.

The IMD said that isolated pockets across Delhi-NCR could experience temperatures below 10°C, along with dense fog and haze during early morning and late evening hours. Residents are advised to stay warm, avoid exposure to cold air, and keep proper heating arrangements, especially for children and the elderly.

Cold Intensifies Across North India

The cold wave is not limited to Delhi alone. Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand have recorded sub-zero temperatures in several hill stations, with fresh snowfall in higher altitudes intensifying the chill across the northern Himalayan region. The icy winds from the hills are expected to move toward the plains, further lowering temperatures in Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh.

The IMD has also warned of morning fog and reduced visibility in several regions, likely affecting road, rail, and air traffic in the coming days.

La Nina Behind the Cold Spell

Meteorologists have pointed out that the ongoing cold wave is because of the La Niña conditions, which often bring colder and longer winters across northern and central India. According to IMD, these climatic patterns typically increase the cold northwesterly winds, which bring a huge drop in temperature across the Indo-Gangetic plains.
