The readiness of Navi Mumbai International Airport has been evaluated by the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Airport Authority of India (AAI), according to a CIDCO official. This review focused on the airport's major milestones in preparation for starting commercial operations.

DGCA Faiz Ahmed Kidwai visited the airport site on Tuesday to assess its preparedness. Before this, successful trial landings were conducted by an IAF transport aircraft on October 11, 2024, and an Indigo commercial aircraft on December 29, 2024. These trials were part of the Instrument Approach procedure at the airport.
Infrastructure and Operational Readiness
The DGCA's comprehensive assessment included a site visit where major areas such as the runway, apron, taxiways, ATC tower, terminal building, and baggage handling systems were inspected. CIDCO stated that these inspections were crucial for evaluating the airport's readiness for operations.
During the inspection, the airport operator showcased its operational readiness by conducting a mock check-in process. Dignitaries received dummy boarding passes and baggage tags, which impressed the inspection team. This demonstration highlighted the airport's preparedness for handling passengers efficiently.
Development and Connectivity
Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) has been developed by CIDCO over an area of 1,160 hectares. It is designed to handle 20 million passengers annually and manage 0.8 million tons of cargo. The development aims to alleviate congestion at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA).
Strategically located in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), NMIA is expected to drive regional development. CIDCO has ensured seamless connectivity through road networks, suburban rail, metro services, and water transport systems. Additionally, there are plans for a Mumbai-Hyderabad High-Speed Rail Corridor to enhance accessibility.
The DGCA's inspection underscored NMIA's potential to become a pivotal hub in the region. With its strategic location and robust infrastructure, it is poised to significantly contribute to easing air traffic congestion in Mumbai while fostering economic growth in surrounding areas.
