The Dharavi Redevelopment Project Pvt Ltd (DRPPL) conducted a groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday at the RPF grounds in Matunga. This event, known as Bhoomi Poojan, marks the start of constructing Railways staff quarters and offices in Sector 6, which will be handed over to the government as per the tender documents.

A DRPPL source stated, "We are redeveloping one of the most densely populated clusters in the world. We have committed to provide Dharavikars with a key-to-key exchange wherein existing residents have been guaranteed new homes within a stipulated timeframe and without shifting to temporary accommodation."
Dharavi Redevelopment Project Details
The project is a joint venture between the state government and the Adani Group, aiming to make Mumbai slum-free by 2030. The state government is conducting a door-to-door survey to identify eligible and ineligible residents, speeding up the redevelopment process for inclusive development.
Mapping approximately 600 acres of densely populated Dharavi is essential for this redevelopment, expected to take seven years. Eligible residents will receive 350-square foot flats in the area upon completion, while ineligible residents will be relocated elsewhere in Mumbai.
Housing Provisions for Residents
Residents will be provided with modern 350 sq ft homes featuring kitchens and toilets. These homes will also offer amenities such as top-class roads, hospitals, schools, and open spaces. These homes are 17 per cent larger than those provided in other slum rehabilitation projects in Mumbai.
Ineligible residents are divided into two sub-categories: those from January 1, 2000, to January 1, 2011, will receive homes on an ownership basis at affordable prices. Post-2011 tenement holders will get homes under the state’s affordable rental housing policy with an option of hire-purchase.
Commercial and Industrial Rehabilitation
All eligible non-polluting industries and commercial establishments will be rehabilitated within Dharavi itself. A state government source mentioned that DRPPL is exploring every possible option to protect livelihoods and businesses.
A DRPPL source added, "Better infrastructure will enable businesses to expand their enterprises, while skilling and upskilling centres will help people acquire new knowledge, learn, and increase their earning potential. Additionally, businesses will benefit from SGST reimbursement for five years, further supporting their growth and sustainability."
The redevelopment project aims to place India on the global map for resettling townships. The new townships will be ultra-modern with schools, hospitals, gardens, and good roads. This initiative is part of Maharashtra's first-ever policy where everyone gets a home regardless of eligibility.
The ceremony on Thursday was aligned with tender conditions and marked the first step towards creating a modern Dharavi. The DRPPL is committed to providing new homes within a stipulated timeframe without requiring residents to move to temporary accommodations.
This redevelopment project is crucial for transforming Dharavi into a modern township while ensuring that all residents have access to better living conditions and amenities.
