Domestic air travel in India reached a significant milestone on November 17, with over 5 lakh passengers flying in a single day. This achievement highlights the strong demand for air travel during the festive and wedding season. According to the civil aviation ministry, 5,05,412 passengers took to the skies on that day, marking the first time this number has been surpassed.

Airlines operated 3,173 flights on November 17, as per data from the ministry. Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu attributed this achievement to increased accessibility of air travel and initiatives like UDAN Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik. Launched in October 2016, UDAN aims to enhance regional air connectivity across India.
Strong Demand During Festive Season
IndiGo celebrated this milestone, noting it as a defining moment for Indian aviation. The airline remarked, "At IndiGo, this is not just a number; it's 3.1 lakh smiles that take off with us every day." Gaurav Patwari from Cleartrip highlighted robust demand during the festive and wedding seasons as key drivers of high passenger numbers.
The occupancy rate for major scheduled carriers exceeded 90% on November 17. However, airlines have faced challenges with On-Time Performance (OTP) recently. IndiGo's OTP was 74.2%, followed by Alliance Air at 71% and Akasa Air at 67.6%. SpiceJet and Air India recorded OTPs of 66.1% and 57.1%, respectively.
Winter Schedule and Flight Operations
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) announced that Indian airlines will operate 25,007 flights weekly during the winter schedule starting October 27. This represents a 3% increase from the summer schedule's 24,275 weekly departures. The winter schedule runs until March 29, 2025.
Compared to the previous winter schedule, there is a 5.37% rise in flight operations. This increase reflects growing demand and expanded connectivity across India's airports. The aviation sector continues to adapt to meet passenger needs while managing operational challenges.
The recent surge in domestic air travel underscores the sector's resilience and adaptability amid fluctuating demands. As airlines navigate these dynamics, they remain committed to enhancing passenger experiences and maintaining service quality.
