The recent US-UK trade agreement, established at the G7 Summit, significantly benefits the aerospace and automotive sectors by reducing tariffs on imports. However, issues regarding steel and aluminium tariffs are still being addressed as both nations work towards a stronger trade relationship.
U.S. President Donald Trump and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced a new trade agreement during the G7 Summit in Canada. This deal reduces tariffs on certain imports from Britain, particularly benefiting the aerospace sector. However, the issue of steel and aluminum tariffs remains unresolved. The agreement is part of ongoing efforts to establish a formal trade relationship between the two nations.
The U.S. plans to impose a quota on steel and aluminum imports from the UK, exempting them from 25% tariffs. This exemption is contingent upon Britain ensuring security in its steel supply chains and production facilities. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick will determine the quota level, according to an executive order from the White House.
UK Aerospace Sector Benefits
The agreement eliminates tariffs on the UK aerospace industry, covering parts and planes. This move is seen as a significant win for Britain's aerospace sector, which was the first to secure such a deal with Washington. The UK Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds highlighted this achievement as a major victory for both aerospace and automotive industries.

Britain has avoided potential tariffs of up to 50% on steel and aluminum that were imposed by the U.S. on other countries earlier this month. Without an agreement, these elevated tariffs could have taken effect starting July 9. The deal aims to prevent such increases by implementing tariff reductions promptly.
Automobile Industry Gains
The two leaders confirmed an annual quota allowing British carmakers to export 100,000 cars to the U.S. at a reduced tariff rate of 10%, compared to the 25% rate faced by other countries. This plan will be implemented seven days after its publication in the Federal Register, according to the White House.
In addition to reducing tariffs on UK cars, aluminum, and steel, Britain agreed to lower tariffs on U.S. beef and ethanol imports. However, some details are still being finalized before full implementation can occur.
Future Tariff Threats Addressed
When asked about future tariff threats against the UK, Trump stated: "The UK is very well protected. You know why? Because I like them. That's their ultimate protection." This comment underscores Trump's positive view of the relationship between both countries.
The agreement also includes reciprocal access for 13,000 metric tons of beef while ensuring that U.S. imports meet stringent UK food safety standards. Both nations remain committed to achieving favorable outcomes for the UK's pharmaceutical sector amid ongoing Section 232 investigations by the U.S. Commerce Department.
Starmer described it as "a very good day for both of our countries," emphasizing it as "a real sign of strength." Meanwhile, Trump mistakenly referred to it as a trade agreement with the European Union before clarifying it was with Britain.
"Bringing trade deals into force can take several months," said Reynolds in a statement, "yet we are delivering on the first set of agreements in a matter of weeks." He assured continued efforts towards securing preferential outcomes for key industries.
