U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a significant increase in tariffs on imports from India, citing India's trade with Russia as a concern. This decision follows his earlier announcement of a 25% tariff, which he plans to raise further. Trump's remarks have sparked criticism from the Indian government, which argues that such targeting is unfair and unreasonable.
The Ministry of External Affairs in India responded to Trump's statements by highlighting that the U.S. had previously encouraged India to import Russian oil to stabilise global energy markets. The ministry emphasised that India's imports are necessary for maintaining affordable energy costs for its consumers, especially after traditional supplies were redirected to Europe due to the Ukraine conflict.

India's Trade Dynamics
India's government has pointed out that both the U.S. and European Union continue trading with Russia at levels exceeding India's trade volume. In 2024, the EU had a bilateral trade of €67.5 billion in goods with Russia, along with €17.2 billion in services in 2023. These figures surpass India's total trade with Russia during the same period.
The Ministry of External Affairs also noted that European imports of LNG reached a record 16.5 million tonnes in 2024, surpassing previous records. Additionally, Europe's trade with Russia includes various sectors such as energy, fertilisers, chemicals, and machinery.
U.S.-Russia Trade Relations
The U.S., despite criticising India, continues importing essential materials from Russia like uranium hexafluoride for its nuclear industry and palladium for electric vehicles. The MEA highlighted these facts to argue against what it sees as unjustified targeting of India by the U.S.
Union Minister Piyush Goyal informed Parliament that India is assessing Trump's tariff announcement's implications and consulting stakeholders to protect national interests. The new tariffs are set to take effect on August 7, placing India at a disadvantage compared to competitors like Vietnam and Mexico.
Trump accused India of profiting from Russian oil sales while ignoring the impact on Ukraine due to the ongoing conflict. He stated his intention to raise tariffs substantially as a response to India's actions.
The Indian government maintains that its trade decisions are driven by necessity rather than choice and criticised Western nations for their continued trade with Russia despite similar circumstances.
As tensions rise over these economic measures, India's stance remains firm on safeguarding its economic security while addressing global market challenges effectively.
