Have you received an SMS claiming that your package has arrived at a warehouse and urging you to update your address details within 24 hours to prevent it from being returned? If so, beware! This is a fraudulent message designed to scam unsuspecting users.
PIB Fact Check Alerts Citizens
The Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check has debunked this message, confirming that India Post never sends such messages requesting users to update their address via an external link. The message in circulation contains a fake link disguised to look like an official government website, attempting to steal sensitive information.
How the Scam Works?
The scam operates in such a manner that it is almost credible. These fraudulent SMSs claim that a package in your name is stuck at a warehouse due to incomplete address details; this creates a sense of urgency to make you act quickly. The message includes a link that appears to be from India Post, but in reality, it redirects you to a fake website that looks like the official postal service portal. This website may display India Post's logo and familiar design elements to deceive users into believing it is legitimate.

Once you click on the link, the site prompts you to enter personal information such as your address, phone number, banking details, or even credit card information under the pretense of verifying or updating your delivery details. Cybercriminals then use this data for identity theft, unauthorized financial transactions, or selling the information on the dark web.
In some cases, the fraudulent site may also install malware on your device, which will lead to more compromised security.
How to Stay Safe from Such Scams
With the rise in online scams, it is very crucial to stay informed about the potential scams ongoing in India currently. Fraudsters every single day are coming up with new and improved techniques to cheat innocent people who are not aware of how these scams work. Here are some of the ways you can follow to stay safe from scams and potential threats.
- Do not click on any suspicious links. Always make sure to verify URLs before opening them.
- Check official sources for any updates. You can also visit the India Post website (www.indiapost.gov.in) for any updates.
- Never share personal details with anyone. India Post has time and again informed that they do not ask for address updates through SMS or external links.
- Always report such fraudulent messages if and when you receive them to cybercrime.gov.in or on PIB Fact Check's official social media handles.
India Post releases official statement
India Post has repeatedly clarified that it does not send SMS or emails asking customers to update their address or make payments via unauthorized links. All genuine communications come only from their official social media handles (@indiapost.gov.in). They also urge citizens to stay alert and help spread awareness to prevent online fraud.
