The Department of Telecom (DoT) is set to consult the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) regarding the allocation of spectrum for satellite communication (satcom) services. This move aims to establish a transparent and equitable framework for all stakeholders, ensuring a competitive landscape. The focus will be on determining the frequencies, pricing, and licensing conditions, with a particular emphasis on security considerations.

Trai had initiated a dialogue on this subject through a consultation paper titled "Assignment of Spectrum for Space-based Communication Services" released on April 6, 2023. However, the discussion was paused following the introduction of the new Telecommunication Act. The forthcoming consultation seeks to address these aspects comprehensively.
The government source emphasized the commitment to an open and transparent process, involving thorough discussions and consultations led by Trai. This approach aims to finalize a pricing mechanism that is fair and accessible to all interested parties. The allocation of spectrum for satcom services will proceed once Trai submits its recommendations on these critical aspects.
Satcom technology is pivotal for enhancing internet connectivity in India's remote and challenging terrains. Notably, major corporations including Bharti Group's OneWeb, Reliance Group's Jio Satcom, and Elon Musk's Starlink have expressed interest in deploying these services across the country. The initiative by DoT and Trai marks a significant step towards leveraging satellite technology to bridge connectivity gaps, thereby fostering digital inclusivity.
