DoT Collaborates with Telecom Providers to Block International Spoof Calls in Phased Approach
The Department of Telecom (DoT), along with telecom service providers (TSPs), is implementing a new system to detect and block international spoofed calls targeting Indian subscribers. This initiative aims to curb fraudulent calls disguised as originating from Indian numbers, manipulated by cybercriminals abroad.

Cybercriminals often misuse the Calling Line Identity (CLI) to hide the true origin of calls. This has resulted in numerous incidents involving threats of mobile disconnection, fake arrests, and impersonation of officials. Recent cases have included false allegations related to drugs and sex rackets, raising public concern.
Advanced System Deployment
The DoT's system is being introduced in two phases. Initially, it operates at the TSP level to block calls spoofed with their own subscribers' numbers. The subsequent phase involves a centralised approach to prevent calls spoofed with numbers from other TSPs.
Currently, all four TSPs have successfully implemented the initial phase. This has led to blocking approximately one-third of spoofed calls, equating to 4.5 million calls, from entering the Indian telecom network.
Future Plans for Centralised System
The next step involves launching a centralised system to eliminate remaining spoofed calls across all TSPs. This phase is expected to be operational soon, further enhancing the security of telecom networks in India.
This initiative reflects a significant effort by the DoT and TSPs to protect citizens from fraudulent activities. By addressing these issues at both the TSP and central levels, they aim to significantly reduce the number of spoofed calls reaching Indian subscribers.
