The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has confiscated 32 kg of methamphetamine tablets valued at approximately Rs 32 crore in Assam and Tripura. Three individuals have been detained in connection with these incidents. The DRI, with the help of Assam Rifles, seized 26 kg of methamphetamine tablets on January 19 in the Dwarband Bazar area of Cachar District, Assam. These drugs were smuggled into India via the India-Myanmar border in Mizoram.

The illicit drug consignment was hidden in a specially constructed cavity within an Ashok Leyland truck. The international market value of this drug haul is estimated at Rs 26 crore. In a separate incident on January 20, the DRI seized 6 kg of methamphetamine tablets worth Rs 6 crore from a truck near Agartala, Tripura. The drugs were concealed beneath the truck's dashboard, leading to the arrest of two individuals.
Drug Seizures and Arrests
In the current fiscal year, the DRI has registered 36 cases related to smuggling and trafficking of illegal drugs in the Northeast region. A total of 70 people have been arrested, including seven women. The seized contraband includes over 231 kg of methamphetamine tablets, 16 kg of heroin, 1,375 kg of ganja (cannabis), and 3.7 kg of hydroponic weed. These seizures are valued at more than Rs 355 crore.
The authorities have also confiscated 32 vehicles used for transporting these drugs, comprising 19 cars and 13 trucks. This highlights the extent to which vehicles are employed in concealing and moving illegal substances across regions.
Emerging Trends in Drug Smuggling
A new trend identified by the DRI involves smuggling hydroponic weed into the Northeast by air passengers. Hydroponic weed is a type of marijuana cultivated not on soil but in nutrient-rich water solutions. This method allows for a different quality and potency compared to traditionally grown cannabis.
The finance ministry's statement underscores the ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in the region. The collaboration between various agencies is crucial in tackling this issue effectively and preventing further illegal activities.
These operations reflect the DRI's commitment to curbing drug smuggling and ensuring public safety. By intercepting such large quantities of drugs, authorities aim to disrupt supply chains and deter future attempts at trafficking.
