In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking in the northeast, authorities have seized nearly 8 kg of heroin and 6.7 kg of opium in Manipur. The heroin is valued at Rs 54.29 crore, while the opium is worth Rs 87.57 lakh in the international grey market, according to the finance ministry's statement on Monday.

The operation, named Operation White Veil, was conducted from June 5 to 7 in Churachandpur District's border areas. This effort involved collaboration between the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Customs, Assam Rifles, and Manipur Police.
Seizure Details and Arrests
During the operation, officials confiscated 7,755.75 grams of heroin and 6,736 grams of opium. Additionally, Rs 35.63 lakh in cash was recovered. The finance ministry confirmed these figures in their statement.
Authorities also seized two Baofeng Walkie-Talkies and a Maruti Eeco Van during the operation. Five individuals were arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.
Smuggling Routes and Challenges
Preliminary investigations suggest that the drugs were smuggled from Myanmar into Churachandpur District through the porous Indo-Myanmar border. Despite facing numerous challenges, coordinated efforts by law enforcement agencies ensured the operation's success.
The Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act imposes severe penalties for offenders. Those convicted may face rigorous imprisonment for up to ten years, highlighting the seriousness of such crimes.
This operation underscores ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in India's northeastern region. The successful seizure demonstrates effective collaboration among various agencies to address this pressing issue.
