Economic Survey 2026 Key Highlights: Nearly days before the Budget 2026 presentation, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is expected to table the Economic Survey 2026 at the parliament on Thursday, January 29.
Presentation of the Economic Survey 2026 document will be followed by a press conference on the document by India's Chief Economic Adviser (CEA) V Anantha Nageswaran. The document, prepared by the Finance Ministry's Department of Economic Affairs, will evaluate the Indian economy's performance during the financial year ending March 31, 2026. GDP Growth
India's real GDP growth rate is estimated to grow at 6.4% in the financial year 2024-25. The GDP numbers indicated that the economic growth continued to move at its long-term average pace. The economy is projected to expand between 6.3% and 6.8% in Financial Year 26-27. The report had projected that the Indian economy is expected to grow between 6.3% and 6.8% in financial year 2025-26 amid domestic opportunities and global uncertainties.
Inflation
The Economic Survey mentioned that the retail headline inflation softened from 5.4 per cent in FY24 to 4.9 per cent in April -December 2024. The inflation rate for FY26 is expected to align with the 4% target considering falling food prices and decline th other commodities cost during the current financial year.
Investment and CAPEX Boost
The capital expenditure (CAPEX) improved in FY25 with an 8.2% on a year-on-year basis, additionally, services exports also showed resilience with persistent growth even in volatile global conditions.
Challenges
The last Economic Survey had mentioned growing Geo-Economic Fragmentation (GEF) as a key challenge for the economy. GEF is replacing globalisation which is leading to imminent economic realignments and readjustments. Focus on systematic deregulation to revive domestic growth will help in empowering individuals.
Financial Sector Health
Bank credit growth remained steady with gross non-performing assets (GNPAs) declining toa 12-year low of 2.6% and significant recoveries under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code.
When Will Economic Survey 2026 Release?
Economic Survey 2026 will be presented on Thursday at 11 am. Nirmala Sitharaman will table the Economic Survey 2025-26 at 11 a.m. on January 29, 2026. This presentation will take place in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. After the tabling, CEA V.A. Anantha Nageswaran will brief the media on major economic trends. The Budget Session runs from January 28, 2026 to April 2, 2026.
