EF Polymer, co-founded by Narayanlal Lal Gurjar, innovatively uses banana and orange peels to develop polymers that enhance water retention in agriculture. This eco-friendly approach supports sustainable farming practices, conserves water, and boosts crop yields.
Narayanlal Lal Gurjar, hailing from a small village in Rajasthan, has made significant strides in the business world with his innovative use of banana and orange peels. His company, EF Polymer, co-founded with Ankit Jain in 2018, has been recognised on the Forbes Japan 30 Under 30 list for 2025. The startup generated a revenue of Rs 4.22 crore in the financial year 2023-24.
EF Polymer is transforming agricultural practices by converting fruit and organic waste into a highly effective tool for farming. The company produces super-absorbent polymers that are entirely organic, derived from fruit peels and other organic materials. These polymers help retain soil moisture, allowing farmers to conserve up to 40% of water while also reducing fertiliser usage and boosting crop yields.

Innovative Agricultural Solutions
The polymer developed by EF Polymer is available as a biodegradable powder made from natural ingredients like banana and orange peels. This product not only offers a sustainable agricultural solution but also encourages eco-friendly practices by turning waste into value. Since its inception, EF Polymer has secured over $4 million in funding from investors such as Beyond Next Ventures.
When integrated into the soil, this polymer absorbs excess water during rainfall or irrigation, preventing wastage and waterlogging. During dry spells, it releases stored water back into the soil gradually. This ensures crops receive consistent moisture over time, reducing the need for frequent watering.
Revolutionising Water Retention
The process begins with testing the polymer in laboratories to confirm its safety and effectiveness for agriculture. Once verified, it is mixed with water where it can absorb up to 50 times its weight. When added to soil, it enriches it with essential micronutrients while enhancing its water retention capacity.
Over time, the polymer dissolves naturally into the ground, supporting healthier crop growth by maintaining optimal moisture levels. This innovative approach not only aids farmers but also promotes sustainable agricultural practices through efficient resource management.
EF Polymer's journey from a small village idea to global recognition exemplifies how innovation can drive change in traditional sectors like agriculture. By leveraging organic waste for beneficial purposes, the company sets an example of how sustainability can be integrated into everyday practices effectively.
