El Mencho Killing: Indian Embassy in Mexico Issues Emergency Advisory; Check All Updates

Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, better known as "El Mencho", was killed during a high-level Mexican military operation on February 22nd. After the escalation of violence, the Embassy of India in Mexico has issued an emergency advisory for Indian nationals residing in or travelling to affected regions.

The El Mencho killing, considered one of the biggest anti-cartel breakthroughs in recent years, has triggered widespread retaliation.

El Mencho Killed in Mexican Military Operation

El Mencho, the leader of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), was reportedly killed in Tapalpa, Jalisco, during an early morning raid by Mexican armed forces.

The 59-year-old El Mencho was a former police officer who became one of Mexico's most feared cartel leaders.
According to reports, Mexican forces stormed his hideout early Sunday. El Mencho and six cartel members were fatally injured during the operation. He succumbed to injuries while being airlifted to Mexico City. In the operations, three Mexican soldiers were wounded.

As Reuters reported, U.S. intelligence agencies assisted in the operation. The U.S. had offered a $15 million reward for information leading to his capture.

After the confirmation of El Mencho's death, violence erupted across multiple states.

Reports indicate roadblocks and vehicle fires in Jalisco; multiple shootouts across more than five states were recorded. Major disruption is seen in Guadalajara, and flights are cancelled to Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta. Residents are advised to shelter indoors.

The U.S. Embassy in Mexico also urged American citizens to remain indoors amid escalating violence. Meanwhile, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that authorities are working to restore order and maintain normalcy.

Indian Embassy in Mexico Issues Emergency Advisory

Due to the ongoing deteriorating security situation, the Embassy of India in Mexico released an urgent advisory for Indian nationals.

The advisory states that due to ongoing security operations, road blockages, and criminal activity, Indian citizens in the following areas should shelter in place until further notice:

• Jalisco State (Puerto Vallarta, Chapala, Guadalajara)
• Tamaulipas State (Reynosa and other municipalities)
• Areas of Michoacan State
• Guerrero State
• Nuevo Leon State

The Indian Embassy in Mexico has recommended the following actions for Indian Nationals as per the advisory

• Be aware of your surroundings
• Minimise unnecessary outdoor movement
• Monitor local media for updates
• Follow instructions of local authorities
